Attention turns to the 2025 NFL Draft for the Cleveland Browns after extending All-Pro defensive end Myles Garrett and trading for quarterback Kenny Pickett.
The drama surrounding Garrett and his request for a trade has been a chaotic start to the offseason for the Browns following a 3-14 season under head coach Kevin Stefanski.
However, Garrett’s four-year extension worth $40 million per year has seemingly put an end to that situation and could open the door for Cleveland to approach the draft a bit differently.
Additionally, Pickett’s signing helps fill the void at quarterback with Deshaun Watson injured and Jameis Winston departing in free agency. It’s not clear, though, if Cleveland wants to put the future of the position entirely in Pickett’s hands.
According to a new mock draft from NFL.com’s Chad Reuter, the Browns are projected to take Penn State EDGE Abdul Carter at No. 2 overall before selecting another passer in a later round.
“Trading for Kenny Pickett means the Browns could focus on taking the best player available at No. 2 before picking up another quarterback later in the draft,” Reuter wrote. “The extension of Myles Garrett does not mean Cleveland will pass on Carter, whose elite talent on the edge would only make the perennial All-Pro better.”
Carter (6-foot-3, 259 pounds) earned Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year and unanimous All-American honors as a junior last season. He racked up the most tackles for loss in the nation (24) while adding 12 sacks in a career-defining year.
Unfortunately, Carter’s foot injury suffered training held him out of combine workouts. NFL teams will have to wait for Carter’s pro day on March 28 to see the elite prospect perform.
