The Chicago Blackhawks struggle on the road more than they do at home.
They have posted a 7-23-5 record so far. This follows a similarly rough 7-32-2 road record last season.
While their home performances have been solid (13-17-4), they will need to find a way to win on the road heading into next season.
With six road games remaining against St. Louis, Washington, Pittsburgh, Boston, Montreal, and Ottawa, the Blackhawks must improve their play on the road.
There are 4 possible reasons why the Blackhawks struggle on the road…
1. Defensive Struggles: Defensive play overall have been an issue for the Blackhawks this season. Their opponent capitalizes early and getting-high scoring chances to jump out to the lead.
2. Special Teams Performance: During their recent four-game road trip, the Blackhawks went 0-for-11 on the power play and 10-for-12 on the penalty kill (83%). While their penalty kill has been effective, their power play continues to struggle.
3. Slow Starts: In three of their last four road games, Chicago failed to get on the board early, allowing their opponent to run away with the game. Stronger defensive structure and offensive pressure will be key to setting the tone early.
4. Maintaining the Lead: In their March 8 road game against the Nashville Predators, Alex Vlasic scored the opening goal, but Chicago failed to maintain the lead. Steven Stamkos scored two goals to put Nashville up 2-1. Despite Ilya Mikheyev tying the game at two to force overtime, the Predators secured a 3-2 win. Stamkos finished the game with a hat trick. This has been a recurring issue with the Blackhawks on the road, and overall this season and something they must correct.
4 ways toward improving road performances…
To turn their road struggles into success, the Blackhawks must focus on these key elements:
1. Tighten Defense: The Blackhawks must limit high-danger scoring chances by improving shot-blocking, forcing turnovers, and providing better support for their goaltender.
2. Play Aggressive: During the last few games and overall, the Blackhawks as a team, have not shown physicality. They will need to play with more intensity, and be assertive.
3. Execute on Special Teams: Taking advantage on power play and killing off most of their penalties will be crucial for success on the road.
4. Setting the Tone Early: Scoring first and controlling the tempo will be another key adjustment for the Blackhawks. Applying this on the road while maintaining the lead will help the Blackhawks come out with the win.
With six road games remaining in the season, the Blackhawks will have to implement these strategies to be a better road team next season and that starts Saturday vs the St. Louis Blues. Facing off against playoff-caliber teams like the Washington Capitals and Ottawa Senators will be key.
Even if they don’t make the playoffs in the 2025-26 season, they could focus on playing solid hockey both at home and on the road.
