Which remaining Detroit Lions free agents the team should re-sign? - Pride Of Detroit

With the first few waves of free agency beyond us now, all that is mostly remaining are minor depth signings for each team. Sure, there are still some big names like Von Miller, Calais Campbell, Teven Jenkins, and Charles Omenihu out there, but most moves made from here on out will address each team’s depth.

For the Detroit Lions, that often means re-signing their own players at this point in free agency. We’ve seen that general manager Brad Holmes often lets his own players seek the best deals they can find in free agency, and then allow the player to come back to Detroit if they don’t find the market value they’re looking for.

So today’s Question of the Day is:

Which of the remaining Lions free agents should the Lions consider re-signing?

My answer: Here’s a look at the Lions free agents who remain unsigned:

  • QB Teddy Bridgewater
  • RB Jermar Jefferson
  • TE Shane Zylstra
  • WR Allen Robinson
  • WR Donovan Peoples-Jones
  • OT Connor Galvin
  • G Kayode Awosika
  • EDGE Al-Quadin Muhammad
  • DL John Cominsky
  • DL Pat O’Connor
  • NT Kyle Peko
  • LB Ben Niemann
  • LB Kwon Alexander
  • CB Khalil Dorsey
  • CB Emmanuel Moseley
  • K Michael Badgley

To me, there are two or three that stand out. Tight end Shane Zylstra is someone who the Lions have liked for the past couple years, and with only three tight ends currently under contract, Detroit needs competitive depth. Last year, Zylstra played in 194 special teams snaps last year, so he can be a valuable asset, even if he’s not in the weekly offensive gameplans.

Another is Khalil Dorsey. The Lions were not shy in saying how excellent Dorsey has been on special teams,

“I mean, this guy’s an incredible player for us, obviously,” special teams coordinator Dave Fipp said last year. “Just watching the film this morning, even a rep of him on punt return holding up one of their gunners, did a great job for us. But he was a great player for us all year long obviously.”

Unfortunately, Dorsey suffered a brutal broken leg in Week 15, so the Lions may be waiting for him to get healthier before they bring him back. I would be shocked if they don’t eventually re-sign him.

Elsewhere, I wouldn’t be surprised if Detroit re-signed some defensive line depth like Pat O’Connor or John Cominsky. Coaches have praised both regularly, and Detroit could use reserves on the line. The same goes for Kayode Awosika when it comes to the offensive line. While he slid down the depth chart toward the end of last season, with no Kevin Zeitler around, Awosika could provide veteran depth who can push Christian Mahogany for a starting role.
