The NFL offseason is in full swing and the Kansas City Chiefs have been players in trying to make their roster better as they look to get over that damning Super Bowl loss.
Having brought in Jaylon Moore to be the starting left tackle, along with Robert Tunyan, Elijah Mitchell, and Kristian Fulton, the rest have been re-signings.
Nick Bolton, Kareem Hunt, Marquise Brown, and Juju Smith-Schuster were all re-signed and are looking at the offensive side of the ball, the Chiefs are bringing back the majority of players who failed in the postseason.
Is that the right move?
Given their salary cap position, all are coming back on team-friendly deals, and all are one-year contracts, too.
Hunt makes sense to provide a change-up to Isiah Pacheco and Elijah Mitchell, with Kareem finishing last season as the No. 1 back. Marquise Brown is a sensible return, given that due to injury, he didn’t get a fair crack last season, and when he did return, he did show flashes of what he could bring to the offense.
Then there’s Smith-Schuster.
In 14 games, the former Pittsburgh Steeler only managed 18 receptions for 231 yards and two touchdowns in the regular season and just four receptions for 76 yards in Kansas City’s three playoff games.
Again, there is merit to the move, with Patrick Mahomes comfortable with each player returning, and all haven’t broken the bank either, which still gives the Chiefs a little flexibility to add more pieces.
After the Super Bowl debacle, the Chiefs appear to be running it back with several offensive pieces, and time will tell if it is the right move.
But with Mahomes at the wheel, we imagine that while 2024 was a down year for some of his weapons, 2025 might be a different story.
