The cornerback position for the Dallas Cowboys received a lot of attention heading into this NFL free agency period.
Multiple impact players were up for new deals, and one in particular was a must-sign…
But when you waste enough time, the league will catch up and outbid.
That is exactly what happened when nickel corner Jourdan Lewis signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars, leaving the Cowboys after an eight-year career in Dallas.
Lewis signed a three-year, $30 million contract with the Jags – a huge promotion from what he was likely to get if he stayed.
The move got mixed reactions from across the league, with multiple Cowboys fans upset about his departure.
Lewis, who had spent his entire career in Dallas, took to social media for a note of appreciation:
“Cowboys nation, thank you .” Lewis wrote on X after his signing.
In an interview at his new facility, the veteran spoke about this offseason’s opportunity to leave Dallas.

“Every offseason I think I am (laughs)… This time it felt a little different…People started to recognize the type of player I am, so it couldn’t be hidden anymore. Couldn’t be getting anymore… the team friendly deals.” pic.twitter.com/ATQoLv0yhA

“Every offseason I think I am (leaving Dallas) … This time it felt a little different … People started to recognize the type of player I am, so it couldn’t be hidden anymore. Couldn’t be getting anymore … team-friendly deals,” he said.
Lewis had grown accustomed to the stereotypical Cowboys contracts that feature little long-term commitment.
But in 2024, Lewis was an integral part of Dallas’ secondary and boosted his value out of the Cowboys’ comfortable price range.
His career-high 71 tackles solidified him as one of the NFL’s best nickel cornerbacks.
And he has let the world know about it too.
Lewis defended himself to a local Jacksonville radio station that was scratching their heads about the decision to pursue him in free agency.
He wrote: “Watch tape. It’s out there…” after the show compared him to the Jaguars other slot corner Jarrion Jones.
They called Jones “one of the higher-rated nickel corners in the National Football League”, but Lewis was quick to make his stand.
“Highest rated slot coverage grade and all we did was match and man.” Lewis wrote in a separate post about his success in the Cowboys’ defensive scheme.
Lastly, Lewis clarified his message from the video above to fans who thought he was dissing the Cowboys.
“I talked about the negotiations of my previous contracts, nothing about what I said was a shot,” Lewis said.
“It’s the nature of the business, I had a better market because I fought so hard for the org. Click bait is ruining player/fan relations.”
The vibe of course comes on the heels of the Micah Parsons vs. DeMarcus Lawrence online spat. (See below.)
For that hard work and leadership, Jourdan Lewis will be an impactful loss for the Cowboys this free agency.
Our Mike Fisher reported people at The Star being “stunned” by the departure.
But judging by Lewis’ posts on X, it seemed the time had come.
