The Kansas City Chiefs are coming off a disappointing finish to a strong 2024 NFL season, falling to the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LIX.
A major issue the Chiefs had throughout the year came at the wide receiver position, with many key players such as Hollywood Brown and Rashee Rice suffering long-term injuries.
Sixth-year wideout Justin Watson was one of the more reliable pass catchers Kansas City had this past season, playing all 17 games and tallying 22 catches for 289 yards and two touchdowns.
The Chiefs have numerous wide receivers that will hit the free-agent market this week, including JuJu Smith-Schuster, DeAndre Hopkins and Mecole Hardman Jr. And, after seeing his two-year, $3.4 million contract with Kansas City come to an end, Watson is on his way out too.
On Monday, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported that Watson, after three straight Super Bowl runs in Kansas City, has signed with the Houston Texans, the very same team the Chiefs defeated in the Divisional Round.
“Another Texans signing: Houston is adding Chiefs FA WR Justin Watson, sources say, as the Penn graduate and former Bucs WR lands in a new home.”
After playing college football for the University of Pennsylvania from 2014-2017, Watson was selected with the No. 144 pick in the 2018 NFL Draft by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Led by Tom Brady, he went on to win his first ring in the 2020 season.
Since signing with the Chiefs in 2022, Watson has been a nice fill-in for injuries over the past three seasons. He was also able to add another two Super Bowl wins to his resume, bringing his total ring count to three.
