The Kansas City Chiefs were bound to lose multiple wide receivers heading into the 2025 offseason. Five wideouts from last season’s roster were scheduled to be free agents, and the team was already looking to get faster and younger all around. Thus, it’s not all that surprising to see Justin Watson finding a new home for the ’25 season.
The Houston Texans have reportedly reached agreement with Watson’s representatives on a new deal, per NFL reporter Ian Rapoport. Terms of the deal were not immediately disclosed.
Watson now joins his third NFL team after seven seasons spent with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Chiefs.
The Chiefs first added Watson in 2022 as a free agent addition intended to strengthen the team’s offensive depth and special teams prowess. While he was never a volume target, Watson was a favorite of the coaching staff and was able to find his way onto the field for an impressive amount of snaps in both areas.
Watson played in 50 games with the Chiefs and started 20 of them. Last season, Watson had 22 catches for 289 receiving yards and 2 touchdowns from Mahomes. Watson had 64 catches for 1,064 yards and 7 touchdowns overall for the Chiefs.
Most importantly, Watson was a key contributor for a team that went to three Super Bowls and won consecutive titles before falling short on a historic three-peat bid in Super Bowl LIX.
With Watson’s departure to Houston and the Chiefs’ re-signing of Marquise “Hollywood” Brown, the team still has another three free agents remaining at the position: DeAndre Hopkins, Mecole Hardman, and JuJu Smith-Schuster.
