The Chicago Blackhawks called up defenseman Artyom Levshunov from the Rockford IceHogs Sunday. The 19-year-old recorded 22 points (five goals, 17 assists) in 50 games played this season.
Levshunov could make his NHL debut today when the Blackhawks continue their four-game road trip in Denver against the Avalanche.
Background on Artyom Levshunov
Selected second overall in the 2024 NHL Draft, Levshunov immediately became a key prospect in Chicago’s rebuilding efforts. Born in Belarus, he arrived in North America speaking little English but was determined to make his name known in his pro hockey career.
After an impressive season with the Green Bay Gamblers in the USHL, during which he scored 42 points (13 goals, 29 assists) in 62 games, Levshunov played for Michigan State and recorded 35 points (nine goals, 26 assists) in 38 games.
He was also named 2024 Big Ten Defenseman of the Year and Freshman of the Year and was selected to the 2024 All-Big Ten First Team and All-Freshman Team.
Levshunov is known for his two-way play, offensive instincts, and physical presence on the blue line. His offense allows him to join the rush, while his defense allows him to maintain strong positional play. These attributes make him a valuable asset on both ends of the ice.
What does this call-up mean?
Adding Levshunov in the lineup strengthens the Blackhawks’ defensive core. It also provides NHL experience for younger players and allows them to fully develop during the rebuilding phase.
As the Blackhawks prepare to face the Avalanche, head coach Anders Sorensen must decide how to structure his defensive pairs.
Does he scratch Alec Martinez? Will he scratch somebody else on the team? How will he work his defensive pairs leading into this game?
One thing for sure is that if Levshunov is given meaningful minutes, that could help him grow into a top-tier defenseman for the Chicago Blackhawks.
Does Levshunov stay with the Blackhawks or return to Rockford?
If Levshunov has a great performance in his debut and in potential future games, he could secure a roster spot with the Blackhawks for the remainder of the season.
However, if he struggles, he would be sent back down to Rockford for further development.
Levshunov’s call-up is a strategic move in the Blackhawks’ rebuild. His potential debut against the Avalanche provides a glimpse into the franchise’s future.
