Chiefs’ Xavier Worthy issues statement after arrest: What his lawyers are saying

Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Xavier Worthy was arrested on Friday night in Texas on a charge of assault against a family or household member by impeding their breathing or circulation. As of early Saturday, he remained in custody at a Williamson County,TX jail without bond.

Shortly after his arrest, Worthy’s attorneys released a statement on his behalf, which was shared with Pro Football Talk. In it, they claim the incident stems from a personal dispute over his partner’s alleged infidelity.

Worthy’s legal team denies allegations

We are aware of the allegation that led to Mr. Worthy’s arrest,” the statement reads. “We are working with law enforcement in Williamson County to ensure they have the benefit of the totality of circumstances that led to this allegation.

According to his legal team, Worthy had repeatedly asked his partner to leave his residence after discovering her alleged infidelity, which they claim is supported by video evidence. The statement further alleges that the complainant refused to leave, engaged in extortive behavior, and damaged property inside the residence. They also claim that she physically attacked Worthy, scratching his face and pulling his hair, with photographic evidence to support their claims.

Despite these allegations, Worthy reportedly told law enforcement at the scene that he did not wish to press charges against the complainant. His attorneys emphasized their confidence that a full investigation will clear his name.

What’s next for Worthy?

If convicted of the charge, impeding the breathing or circulation of a family member, Worthy could face a prison sentence of two to ten years, along with a fine of up to $10,000.

The 23-year-old receiver was selected 28th overall by the Chiefs in the 2024 NFL Draft after playing college football at Texas. He had an impressive rookie season, scoring nine total touchdowns.

As the legal process unfolds, it remains to be seen how this situation will impact his NFL career.
