BREAKING : Lions Decide to Risk Losing Young Depth Piece With Pre-FA Decision

Lions head coach Dan Campbell during the playoff game against the Commanders.

The Detroit Lions have possessed one of the league’s most potent offenses over the last two seasons. While former offensive coordinator Ben Johnson is given most of the praise for his play calling, the dominant offensive line the team built deserves just as much credit. This past season, Detroit’s offensive line depth was tested occasionally when a starter missed a game or two.

Thankfully, the o-line depth proved to be sufficient in protecting Jared Goff. That said, the Lions have decided to move on from a young potential depth piece on the offensive line ahead of free agency. According to Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press, the Lions informed offensive tackle Connor Galvin they will not be extending him an ERFA tender on Tuesday.

Lions Fine With Parting Ways With Offensive Tackle Connor Galvin

The Lions signed Galvin as an undrafted free agent out of Baylor in 2023. During his three seasons at Baylor, Galvin played offensive tackle, allowing nine sacks, five QB hits, and 22 QB hurries, according to PFF. Furthermore, Galvin finished each of his college seasons with an overall grade of 70 or higher. His best season came in 2021, with an 80.0 overall grade.

Despite Galvin’s dominant play at tackle in college, scouts projected him to be a guard at the next level due to his arm length, edge firmness, and core strength. These weaknesses had him projected to be a seventh-round/undrafted talent.

As a rookie, Galvin played in all three preseason games. In those games, he allowed one QB Hit and one QB pressure. Moreover, he earned an 82.2 pass-blocking grade in the first preseason game and a 79.5 pass-blocking grade in the last preseason game. Overall, Galvin’s strong preseason earned him a spot on the practice squad. in 2023

Unfortunately, the 24-year-old suffered a torn MCL in the first preseason game of 2024, sidelining him for the whole season. As a result, Galvin was unable to improve this season. Although that’s totally understandable, the Lions deciding to risk losing him is also reasonable.

Nevertheless, hopefully, Galvin will be able to land on his feet and earn playing time on another team.
