The Cleveland Browns have had many quarterbacks over the last 20 years, and it looks like they are finishing up another failed experiment with Deshaun Watson. Dan Graziano of ESPN reported that Watson has potentially played his last game for the Browns.
Watson had 1,148 yards, five touchdowns, and three interceptions on a 63.4% completion percentage in seven games for the Browns last season. Watson missed the second half of the season with an Achilles injury.
For this report to come out, the Browns are likely interested in Miami quarterback Cam Ward. The Browns seem to be entering a rebuilding phase, with Myles Garrett wanting out of Cleveland, and it is unlikely they will throw big money at a free-agent quarterback like Sam Darnold or Russell Wilson just for them to be a bridge quarterback.
The guarantee that Cam Ward will be a top-three pick could give the New England Patriots a better chance of securing Travis Hunter or Abdul Carter.
New England hopes that the first three picks in this year’s draft will allow it to take as many quarterbacks as possible, allowing it to land one of its main targets.
Watson could also sign with a quarterback-needy team, though that would likely not prevent the team from drafting a quarterback. The Patriots might also consider signing Watson if they can find a trade package for backup quarterback Joe Milton.
While not the Patriots’ first option, acquiring Watson could become viable if they receive a good return for Milton. They could secure Watson for a low cost due to his previous large contract and his value being at its lowest while also gaining a veteran quarterback and former MVP candidate to help mentor Drake Maye.
The 29-year-old was on multiple playoff rosters and has even won a playoff game. Regardless, this Watson news is excellent for the Patriots and could help them secure their top option in the draft.
