Dak Prescott is QB1 in Dallas … there is no arguing that. Heading into free-agency however, he is just one of two quarterbacks under contract. Practice-teamer Will Grier is the other.
Last year Cowboys fans watched Cooper Rush and Trey Lance get playing time under center after Prescott’s injury, but both of their futures in Dallas loom in the balance as free agents this year.
COO Stephen Jones has said recently that he expects Lance to explore other options in free agency. This sets up the assumption that the Joneses are content with Rush serving as Dak’s backup.
That is until the Cowboys have begun conducting interviews at the NFL Scouting Combine. They were reportedly not really planning to talk with some of the draft’s most prominent QB prospects.
But it seems, at least informally, Dallas has met with Ole Miss gunslinger Jaxson Dart.
“It’s been great sitting down with them talking ball and kind of just starting to build that relationship,” Dart said at the Combine.
These meetings don’t take up too much time, but the fact that a meeting was held raises the eyebrows of Cowboys Nation.
Dart was one of the best players in college football last season, throwing for 4,279 yards and 29 touchdowns (both top-10 marks in the NCAA). He has shown flashes of good decision-making and accuracy, posting a 69.3% completion percentage for the Rebels in 2024.
Is there a plan to chase a quarterback in this year’s draft? What is in the cards for Cooper Rush if that’s the case? Would this be a too “selectively aggressive” move by Dallas?
Only time will tell, but the preliminary talks with Dart ignite a decision the Cowboys need to make in adding depth behind Prescott.
This week, Dart and others in this year’s loaded quarterback class will throw at the Combine. ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr. has Jaxson Dart as the third best QB option among the group.
It remains to be seen if he falls to Dallas in the early rounds and the Cowboys pull the trigger.
