The Cincinnati Bengals are hiring Sean Desai as a senior defensive assistant, according to a report Monday from NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.
Desai spent last season as a senior defensive assistant for the Los Angeles Rams.
Desai goes back several years with Al Golden, who became the Bengals’ defensive coordinator in January.
What to know about the 41-year-old Desai:
Desai’s coaching career started at Temple University, under then-Owls head coach Al Golden.
Desai was a grad student at Temple when Golden hired him as a grad assistant, helping players with academics and later working with the defense and special teams.
Desai also taught at Temple, and was ready to leave coaching to become a full-time professor at George Washington University when Golden convinced him to stay on the Owls’ staff.
Desai became Temple’s outside linebackers coach and special teams coordinator in 2010, at age 27.
Desai played high school football, but did not play in college.
Desai was ESPN analyst Dan Orlovsky’s teammate at Shelton High School. Desai played defensive back and helped Shelton to a state championship.
Desai attended Boston University, graduating in three years and volunteer coaching his younger brother’s football team on weekends.
He got his Master’s from Columbus University, and got his doctorate in education from Temple.
At 38, Desai became the first Indian-American coordinator in NFL history.
Desai worked for the University of Miami Hurricanes and Boston College Eagles before becoming a Chicago Bears assistant coach for eight seasons.
The Bears named Desai their defensive coordinator for the 2021 season.
Desai was an associate head coach and defensive assistant for the Seattle Seahawks in 2022, and became the Philadelphia Eagles’ defensive coordinator the following season.
