The Kansas City Chiefs roster is likely to look very different in 2025, as they won’t be able to keep every big-name free agent they currently have. Defensively, this means that breakout linebacker Nick Bolton may not return to Kansas City in 2025. Currently, Spotrac projects Bolton signing a four-year deal worth $49 million this offseason.
If the Chiefs are unable to meet the contract demand, that leaves Leo Chenal as one of the only linebackers with extensive game experience. The 24-year-old has started 32 games and played in 41% of the defensive snaps the past two seasons.
That said, it’s still important to bring in some veteran depth. With that in mind, there is one veteran linebacker who may be overlooked by many teams due to his recent injury track record.
Chiefs Should Look Into Shaq Thompson This Offseason
Over the past two seasons, Shaq Thompson suffered season-ending injuries early in the year. In 2023, Thompson broke his fibula in Week 2. Then, this past season, he tore his Achilles in Week 4.
Prior to his injuries, the soon-to-be 31-year-old put together four consecutive seasons of 100+ tackles. Moreover, Thompson has only had one season below a 60-run defense grade but has struggled in pass coverage, only putting together three seasons with a better than 60 grade, according to PFF.
Despite his struggles in pass coverage, Thompson would be a worthwhile addition for the Chiefs. Not only could he provide more veteran knowledge at the linebacker position for the younger players, but he’s also projected to have a cheap contract. According to Spotrac, Thompson is expected to receive a one-year deal worth $1 million.
Although Thompson might be looking for a higher salary, the projection makes sense, given his age and injuries. Nevertheless, as long as he isn’t looking to make more than $10 million next season, Brett Veach should look into adding Thompson in the offseason.
