The Kansas City Chiefs edged out the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 30-24 in overtime at Arrowhead Stadium, and DeAndre Hopkins played a starring role.
In just his second game as a Chief, Hopkins was influential for the offense, having eight receptions for 86 yards and two touchdowns to announce to the NFL that Kansas City still has the weaponry to make a Super Bowl run.
Patrick Mahomes, who is getting used to playing with the All-Pro, likened Hopkins to Travis Kelce regarding the receiver’s ability to find the soft spots in the defense.
“He’s just so good at winning one-on-one,” Mahomes said. “To be able to have him down in the red zone, third-down situations, he does a good job of filling out and finding those windows. He’s kind of like Travis [Kelce], I think as he figures out the entire offense, he’ll get even better.”
With Hopkins now finding his feet in Andy Reid’s offense, it is yet another lever the Chiefs can pull.
Mahomes’ weapons in Kelce, Hopkins, Just Watson, Samaje Perine as a pass catcher, Juju Smith-Schuster when he returns, and then Kareem Hunt at running back, the Chiefs have again found a way to make the best of a bad situation.
Sitting at 8-0, the Chiefs are again the benchmark in the NFL, and while the win over Tampa Bay wasn’t their best outing, when push came to shove, Mahomes, as he often has, got the job done.
And he had Hopkins doing a lot of the heavy lifting.
