While longtime Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers took a lot of heat during the 2024 season, he didn’t play as poorly as some may have you believe.
Sure, his 63.0 completion percentage was his lowest since 2019. And his uncharacteristic 11 interceptions matched the third-highest total of his entire career. But let’s not forget that Rodgers ranked eighth among all NFL quarterbacks in passing yards with 3,897 and tied for seventh in passing touchdowns with 28.
By comparison, Jordan Love completed 63.1% of his passes for 3,389 yards with 25 touchdowns and the same 11 interceptions. It should be noted that Love appeared in two fewer games, which is partially why some of his stats are lower. But it’s also worth mentioning that Rodgers had the higher overall PFF grade, coming in at 77.8, while Love ended the year at 75.8.
All that said, the reason Love didn’t take much heat during this past season is because the Packers were a good team, finishing the regular season at 11-6. Rodgers’ New York Jets, however, were an absolute disaster, going 5-12.
Despite Rodgers’ solid season, the Jets have made it clear that they’re ready to move on, leaving many to wonder if the 41-year-old will retire. But if the four-time NFL MVP does decide to continue his career, he’ll undoubtedly have several suitors. However, per Rodgers himself, those suitors will have to check two boxes before he’d consider signing a contract.
Aaron Rodgers names the two things he’s looking for in his next team
Now, to be clear, the QB comparison above wasn’t meant to suggest that the Packers should give any thought to a Rodgers reunion. It was simply done to prove that the 10-time Pro Bowler still has what it takes to compete at a fairly high level.
Even if Green Bay wanted to entertain it, the four-year, $220 million extension they gave Love last summer kicks in this year. As such, it’s not as if they could afford it anyway. Just wanted to clear all of that up in case there was any confusion. So, let’s move on, shall we?
In a recent conversation with TMZ Sports, Rodgers was asked what factors need to be taken into consideration when attempting to find a new team.
The first factor was quite simple, as Rodgers replied, “If they want you.” So, that immediately takes Green Bay out of the equation.
Pressed for a second answer, the four-time First-Team All-Pro went with, “If they’ve got a good team.” The Packers do check that box. But again, a reunion isn’t happening.
If Rodgers genuinely sticks to those parameters, he may have trouble, as most of the franchises that need help at the quarterback position at the moment won’t fit his “good team” category, a list that includes the Tennessee Titans, Las Vegas Raiders, and New York Giants. The Jets are obviously in that group as well, but that’s not a thing now.
One interesting option could be for Rodgers to follow the Brett Favre career path by joining the Minnesota Vikings, who seem ready to say goodbye to Sam Darnold and hand the reins to young J.J. McCarthy. Rodgers could potentially serve as the bridge Darnold was meant to be this past year before McCarthy suffered a season-ending knee injury during training camp.
The other popular option going around right now is the Pittsburgh Steelers, who are ready to watch both Russell Wilson and Justin Fields hit free agency. Like the Vikings, the Steelers certainly fit the “good team” standard.
And again, of course, Rodgers could just opt for retirement. With the free agency signing period set to begin on March 12, we’ll just have to see how everything plays out.
