Ex-College Rival of Amon-Ra St. Brown Officially Joins Lions - Athlon Sports

USC Trojans great Amon-Ra St. Brown now knows who’ll officially help new Detroit Lions offensive coordinator John Morton as passing game coordinator. Though it’s an old college football rival of the All-Pro wide receiver.

The franchise officially unveiled the complete list of coaches who’ll comprise the 2025 Lions. David Shaw is coming on board to take the aforementioned position next to Morton. He’s the same Shaw who once coached, plus even tried recruiting, St. Brown to Stanford.

Shaw spent 2011 to 2022 in Palo Alto. He spearheaded Rose Bowl appearances and Pac-12 titles during his run at The Farm. Along the way, he had to help game plan against St. Brown’s USC teams from 2018 to 2019.

Those Trojan teams spilt the series with St. Brown running routes and catching passes. St. Brown grabbed only two receptions for 39 yards in the 2018 meeting won by Stanford. However, St. Brown went off on the Cardinal by grabbing eight receptions for 97 yards and scoring twice in the 45-20 romp during the ’19 season. USC and Stanford never met in the truncated 2020 season due to COVID-19.

The Lions star revealed on his St. Brown’s Podcast on Feb. 7 that Shaw was in the process of joining head coach Dan Campbell and his staff. St. Brown revealed he first met Shaw during a recruiting visit to the Stanford campus.

“I’ve known Shaw since high school. I always thought he was a great guy and honest,” St. Brown said. “He texted me after he was hired. I’m excited to see him. It’s going to be fun.”

Stanford emerged as one of St. Brown’s offers out of Mater Dei High School in Santa Ana. St. Brown, however, eventually accepted the Trojans’ offer to join their 2018 recruiting class.

This will be the former college head coach’s first sideline job since the ’22 season with Stanford. His last Cardinal team finished 3-9 overall.

Shaw, though, leaped to the NFL afterward. He served as senior personnel executive for the Denver Broncos under Sean Payton the last two seasons.
