New England Patriots cornerback Christian Gonzalez commented on how competitive things got behind the scenes at practice against rookie quarterback Drake Maye.

Gonzalez admitted Maye talks “a lot more than people think” during a recent interview on Jon Gruden’s “Gruden Goes Long” podcast.

“[Maye] just likes to compete,” said Gonzalez. “We go at it in practice. He talks a lot more than people think, too. I’m excited for him. He had a good year. Excited to see him take that step next year.”

Both Maye and Gonzalez have forged a bond together as the two centerpieces of the Patriots’ rebuild.

It’s no surprise that Gonzalez has high hopes for Maye in his second NFL season. The former North Carolina star showed poise and athletic ability under center with little help around him. There’s a strong belief that he can build on that early success moving forward.

If Maye is that competitive towards his teammates, he must be even more competitive towards opponents. The Patriots will need every bit of that fire to bounce back in a big way after their third straight losing season.
