Despite loss, Patriots defender believes ‘hard work is paying off’

Deatrich Wise

The New England Patriots nearly pulled off a thrilling overtime win over the Tennessee Titans on Sunday, but they fell just short. Despite the loss, rookie quarterback Drake Maye showed a lot of promise — particularly on his 11.82 second scramble that led to a 5-yard game-tying touchdown as time expired.

While it was a disappointing loss against a team that had just one win going into the Week 9 matchup, one Patriots captain knows they still did a lot of things well.

“We have done a lot of great things these last couple weeks. We know hard work definitely is paying off,” defensive end Deatrich Wise said. “It’s that we need to continue to stay together. We need to continue to grind at practice, and the more we grind at practice, when it comes to these close games, I know we’ll have the level of training to come out with the W. And that’s kind of what it is. Coach (Jerod Mayo) always says we fall to the level of our training to every situation.”

Wise specifically pointed to one specific instance where he could have done a better job for the Patriots.

“I could have done a better job on the third-down rush at the beginning of the game,” he said. “If we keep (Mason Rudolph) in the pocket and get off the field on that drive, who knows what could happen next.”

The Patriots now prepare to face the Chicago Bears and rookie quarterback Caleb Williams in Week 10. The Bears are 4-4 and have lost two straight games.
