The Chicago Blackhawks made a surprising roster move Friday by recalling goalie Drew Commesso from the AHL’s Rockford IceHogs. In a corresponding move, the Blackhawks assigned defenseman Isaak Phillips to Rockford.

Why Recall Drew Commesso?
After Drew Commesso’s promotion, the Blackhawks have three goalies on the roster. Why do so? Chicago’s slate of back-to-back games spanning Friday and Saturday may have something to do with it.
Petr Mrazek is scheduled to start Friday against the Nashville Predators. Head coach Luke Richardson hinted Thursday that Arvid Soderblom would likely start Saturday against the Dallas Stars. If those plans remain intact, Commesso figures to have a short stint with Chicago as an insurance option.
If Friday’s game becomes a blowout or Mrazek suffers an injury, the Blackhawks could turn to Commesso and keep Soderblom fresh for Saturday. While surprising, Commesso taking Isaak Phillips’ spot on the roster offers the Blackhawks depth at a more needy position in the immediate future. Phillips has been a healthy scratch since being recalled on Oct. 17, and blue-line reinforcements could be on the way.
Veteran defenseman Alec Martinez is expected to travel with the Blackhawks to Dallas and return from injured reserve soon. When Martinez is activated, it stands to reason that Commesso would return to Rockford in a corresponding move.
