Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs have returned the the championship game once again, this time facing Jalen Hurts and the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LIX.
Over the past six seasons, the Chiefs have created one of the best dynasties the NFL has seen. They have secured a spot in five different Super Bowls while winning three. A fourth ring and the first-ever NFL three-peat is on the line against the Eagles.
But before there was Mahomes and the Chiefs, another dynasty was dominating the league.
Tom Brady, Bill Belichick, and the New England Patriots created a dynasty that lasted nearly 20 years. During his time with the Patriots, Brady made nine Super Bowls and won six. But in his most recent Super Bowl win with the Pats during the 2018 season, Brady had to get past Mahomes and Kansas City in the AFC Championship Game.
On Friday, Brady made a guest appearance on “The Herd with Colin Cowherd” live from New Orleans as the Super Bowl approaches. The three-time NFL MVP discussed Mahomes and his run with the Chiefs before revealing the message he had for the Kansas City quarterback after the 2018 AFC championship.
“When I first met Patrick in person, it was the 2018 [AFC] Championship Game,” Brady said. “We ended up beating the Chiefs… And I went to his locker room because I had not had a chance to say hi to him. And I went in the locker room and I said, ‘Hey I watched you all year, and I just want to tell you, keep doing what you’re doing. You’re a great leader, and I know you’re going to get back here, and you’re on to the right stuff, and just never lose track of that.'”
Following his 20 seasons in New England, Brady went on to sign with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. In the first season with his new team, Brady won his seventh Super Bowl and fifth Super Bowl MVP, defeating the Chiefs once again. That was the first playoff loss of Mahomes’ career.
Super Bowl LIX between the Chiefs and Eagles is on Sunday at 6:30 p.m. ET at the Superdome.
