BREAKING NEWS: Ted Karras Ready To Learn New Tricks In 10th Season

C Ted Karras prepares to snap the ball during practice, Thursday, December 26, 2024.

NEW ORLEANS _ Two of the more popular Bengals of the last 20 years, Ring of Honor member Chad Johnson and center-captain Ted Karras, hooked up Wednesday on Super Bowl Radio Row.

“Chad’s a trip,” re-confirmed Karras after he and Bengals right guard Alex Cappa appeared on The Ocho’s show with Shannon Sharpe.

When it comes to new Bengals offensive line coach Scott Peters, Karras did what he did as a young player in New England. He consulted with mentor David Andrews. Peters coached the Patriots offensive line last season and Andrews gave Karras glowing reviews.

“David said he’s great. He’ll be good for your room,” Karras said. “We had a great conversation and I think he’ll bring great energy.”

Andrews gave Karras some insight on Peters’ strike system as a hands expert.

“I’m interested in some new techniques as a 10-year vet. I’m excited for that,” said Karras, who’s not sure how drastically different the techniques are going to be from what Frank Pollack taught the previous four seasons. “I’m not sure. You know him as well as I do.”

Karras does know that Peters has done work under former Bengals line coach and consultant Jim McNally: “He’s a Mouse McNally guy, so I’m excited about that.”

Peters says his strength is development and Karras is looking forward to him working with left guard Cordell Volson as he heads into his fourth season. Volson, a fourth-round pick, didn’t miss a snap in his career until the Bengals made some moves on the line during last season’s final month.

“We have a lot of good talent in the room with some younger guys,” Karras said. “I’m excited for Cordell to learn a slightly different technique.

“You miss the dance two years in a row and there’s fallout that happens. That’s the sad part of our business. I feel badly it happened, but I’m also excited for a new guy, too. They’re not mutually exclusive.”

Karras is slated to be the first Bengals center to start four straight Opening Days since Russell Bodine from 2014-17.

SLANTS AND SCREENS: Defensive end Duane Clemons played the last three seasons of his 10-year career with the 2003-5 Bengals, which meant he had 40 memorable games with The Ocho. Clemons caught up with Johnson Wednesday on Radio Row in his role as a podcaster for the Ed Block Courage Award and got Johnson to talk about his post-career as a media influencer.

“I never know what’s next,” The Ocho told Clemons. “So I never know what I’m going to say.”

Clemons is used to Johnson’s sense of humor because he enjoys it on the Bengals’ rather notorious text chain of former players. Clemons figures about 25 alumni are on the chain, such as Johnson, fellow Ring of Honor member Willie Anderson, linebacker Brian Simmons, and quarterback Akiki Smith.

Clemons, an ambassador for the Chiefs, the club for whom he had his best years, is also on a text chain with some of his Kansas City teammates. But it’s not the same.

“It’s more formal,” Clemons said. “Fewer shenanigans than on the Bengals’ chain, which is like being in a locker room. Chad’s always fun. Willie Anderson is always insightful. Akili always has an uplifting sentiment. He’s very affirming. I love how everybody has a slightly different spice. Like making gumbo.” …

Clemons flashed his three Super Bowl rings at Johnson and told him, “I’m looking for one for the pinky,” against the Eagles in Sunday’s Super Bowl. That reminded them of the day in 2003 they beat another favored Chiefs team when the Bengals upset 9-0 Kansas City.

“I went into that game with a chip on my shoulder,” Clemons said. “The Chiefs had cut me, and then I signed with the Bengals. Nobody likes being fired and (head coach) Dick Vermeil fired me. We hugged after the game, but it’s always goody-goody after a game.” …
