There has been a ton of overturn along the Detroit Lions coaching staff. After losing in the Divisional Round to the Washington Commanders, the Lions saw countless coaches get poached from their coaching staff.

Ben Johnson was arguably the biggest loss on the coaching staff, as he landed with the Chicago Bears. Jared Goff was down in Orlando for the 2025 Pro Bowl Games. He was interviewed by SiriusXM NFL Radio and discussed Johnson’s departure.

He said, “I was joking with him, I wish he didn’t have to be in our division so I didn’t have to try and beat him twice a year.”

Goff added that he’ll always be a fan of his, and they have a great relationship. The California product also spoke about new offensive coordinator John Morton, stating that they’ve already spoken and have a history. He was the senior offensive assistant back in 2022 with the Lions.

This past season, the Lions’ offense was one of the best units in the league. They were second in total offense (409.5) and passing offense (263.2). Detroit was also sixth in rushing offense (146.4) and first in points per game (33.2).

That is a tall task for Morton to mimic, but he’s been in the NFL for over two decades. He’s had stops with the Oakland Raiders, New Orleans Saints, San Francisco 49ers, New York Jets, and most recently the Denver Broncos. He’s been a part of multiple different offensive systems and looks to bring that over to the Motor City.

The Lions’ offense has a bunch of difference-makers that include Goff, Amon-Ra St. Brown, Jameson Williams, Sam LaPorta, David Montgomery, and Jahmyr Gibbs.

It’s up to Morton to keep the offensive production up to the standards that Johnson set. He already has the backing off his franchise QB.

It’s also clear that Goff and the Lions will do everything in their power to sweep Ben Johnson and the Bears during the 2025 season.
