Andy Reid retirement plan as Chiefs owner tells him to 'think about succession' - The Mirror US

Eventually, Andy Reid will leave the Kansas City Chiefs and retire from the NFL.

Chiefs fans everywhere are hoping that day doesn’t come for a long, long time. Reid has led Kansas City to four Super Bowls – winning three – with the help of star quarterback Patrick Mahomes, several offensive weapons, and one of the NFL’s finest ever defenses.

Reid will try to bring fourth a Vince Lombardi Trophy back to Kansas City when his team take on the Philadelphia Eagles at Super Bowl LIX on February 9. There’s every chance the Chiefs will win another championship, but how much longer will Reid stay in Kansas City?

The 66-year-old has been the head coach of the Chiefs since 2013, having previously held the same position in Philadelphia for 13 years. Reid enjoyed huge success with the Eagles, leading them to nine playoff runs and a defeat to the New England Patriots at Super Bowl XXXIX. He also worked as an offensive coach for the Green Bay Packers for six years.

Reid isn’t planning on leaving Kansas City anytime soon, as his current contract does not expire until after the Super Bowl in February 2029. He will turn 72 the month after that game, while star tight end Travis Kelce turns 40 in October of that year.

And Chiefs owner Clark Hunt reassured fans by telling ESPN last October: “He (Reid) certainly seems rejuvenated, I would say, by the success of the team in the last few years and having one of the most special quarterbacks of all time. I have no sense that he has any interest in retiring… soon, which is fantastic.”

Reid is chasing another Super Bowl win

Hunt also said that he could “absolutely” see Reid still coaching the Chiefs into his seventies, with Mahomes still only 29 heading into Super Bowl LIX. But he also warned Reid: “I think any leader needs to be thinking about succession… Eventually that day will come.”

Reid was asked about retirement by The Athletic last July. He said: “I know I’m on the bottom side of this thing and not on the top side of the net. So as it’s coming, but I don’t know what it is. And, this is a great place to coach, and I’ve got good players.

“I’ll be 71 at the end of this contract, and that seems like really old, you know, I don’t really know. And, so I well, we’ll see, see where it all goes.”

Bill Belichick currently has the most Super Bowl wins as a head coach, having claimed six rings during his time in charge of the Patriots. Joe Gibbs won three Super Bowls with Washington, while Bill Walsh achieved the same amount of wins with the San Francisco 49ers. Chuck Noll was victorious four times in the Super Bowl with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
