Mike Vrabel mostly cleaned house when he took over as New England Patriots head coach, but there will be at least three holdhovers from the Jerod Mayo era.

Ben McAdoo reportedly will be one of them. The former New York Giants head coach served as a senior offensive assistant in 2024, and he was retained along with special teams coaches Jeremy Springer and Tom Quinn.

It would only seem natural for McAdoo to carry over his role into next season. However, Mike Giardi of the Boston Sports Journal reported Saturday that the 47-year-old will work on the defensive side of the ball in a role yet to be determined. The most perplexing part of the move is that McAdoo doesn’t have experience working with that side of the game in his collegiate or pro career.

The Patriots insider admitted he couldn’t find logic in the move. It’s not uncommon for offensive coaches to work on defense and vice versa since it gives a staff different eyes to view weaknesses.

MassLive’s Mark Daniels noted that on Thursdays during the 2024 season, McAdoo operated as the scout team’s defensive coordinator to help the offense prepare for third down situations.

It was an out-of-the-box move after previous coaching staff decisions seemed logical. It might not matter in the grand scheme of Vrabel’s vision, but it stood out as an interesting decision.
