BREAKING NEWS : Chiefs Expected to Give Standout Lineman a Record-Breaking Contract

Tyreek Hill Torn on Patrick Mahomes' Kansas City Chiefs vs. Philadelphia Eagles Super Bowl Pick - Athlon Sports

The Kansas City Chiefs are one of two teams still with football left to play, as they are set to face off against the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl 59 in February.

Every other team has already moved on to the offseason, between filling out their coaching staffs and front offices to working on contract extensions.

The Chiefs have a number of offseason decisions ahead of them, regardless of the outcome of the Super Bowl, where they hope to become the first team to ever three-peat.

One of the biggest decisions for the Chiefs is whether or not to re-sign Trey Smith, who has started all but one game for the Chiefs since being drafted in the sixth-round of the 2021 draft. Smith was named to his first Pro Bowl this season.

This season, Smith had a 93.9% pass block win rate, and the Chiefs by all accounts are hoping to keep their offensive line together, especially after center Creed Humphrey got a massive payday last offseason, with a $72 million deal.

Smith is expected to surpass Humphrey’s deal, as his 95.6% pass block win rate since entering the NFL is the second highest among guards, behind his teammate Joe Thuney.

Per Dan Graziano of ESPN+, “The Eagles’ Landon Dickerson is at the top of the guard market, earning $21 million per year. Based on what I’m hearing, it shouldn’t be a problem for the Chiefs to give Smith a deal that at least matches that in terms of annual value and tops the $63 million in guarantees that Robert Hunt got from the Panthers.”

Graziano’s prediction is that Smith will land a five year, $105 million contract, 65 of which would be guaranteed. This would lead the guard market in the NFL, and tie its highest average annual value contract.
