The Patriots have a ton riding on the relationship between quarterback Drake Maye and new offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels.
So far, so good.
Maye and McDaniels haven’t been able to get on the field together just yet, but the former certainly seems to be excited about the prospect of learning from someone with so much experience in New England.
“Coach McDaniels, obviously what he’s done (with the Patriots) and the success he’s had, I’m fortunate to be able to have a guy come in who has done it at a high level and learn from him coaching one of the best ever — the best ever in my opinion, Tom (Brady),” Maye said on Sirius XM, as transcribed by ESPN’s Mike Reiss. “I have a great chance to go back — all those years of film he has in the little database, it’s all their play-calls, all Coach McDaniels’ stuff and what he did with Tom. It’s fortunate for me to go back and study it up and get ready for this next season.”
Maye will have to adjust quite a bit in making the shift toward McDaniels, as his scheme historically uses different verbiage than that of former offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt. The Patriots will want to pile more on their young quarterback’s plate, which should make things easier on those around him.
How will that work? It remains to be seen.
