BREAKING NEWS : 🚨 Why Did Travis Kelce Receive a Stern Warning Before Super Bowl 59? 🤔 You Won’t Believe the Reason! 🏈🔥

Super Bowl 2024 San Francisco 49'ers vs Kansas City Chiefs Latest News and Analysis - Athlon Sports

During his NFL career, Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce has built his reputation on and off the field around his fun-loving persona.

Kelce has broken countless records and won three Super Bowls with Kansas City with a smile on his face. He has never been shy to improvise a lateral or freestyle a play with quarterback Patrick Mahomes along the way.

His confidence and humor have carried him into roles as a podcaster, actor and boyfriend to one of the most famous humans on Earth, pop sensation Taylor Swift.

However, there was a time in Kelce’s career when being the life of the party did not pay such handsome dividends.

With the Chiefs headed to Super Bowl LIX in New Orleans, his mother dutifully warned him – in front of Swift, no less – not to repeat one of the biggest mistakes of his life, which occurred in the Big Easy.

“I just wanted to get out of there,” Kelce recalled in a 2023 interview with Vanity Fair. “I was so embarrassed, I didn’t want to look at anybody.”

In a video posted by the Kansas City Star after Sunday’s AFC championship, “Mama Kelce” could be heard informing Swift about her son’s “history” on Bourbon Street.

The four-time All-Pro remained cool and collected in front of his girlfriend, laughing off the memory and swearing off Hand Grenades on this year’s visit to New Orleans.

“I won’t be having as much fun as I did before,” Travis said, before his mother warned, “No, you won’t!”

The 35-year-old has not forgotten his trip to New Orleans for the 2009 Sugar Bowl, which nearly derailed his football career before it truly began.

“I was down in New Orleans, listening to Lil Wayne, and I wanted to smoke what he was smoking,” Kelce admitted in the 2023 interview.

A redshirt sophomore on the undefeated University of Cincinnati football team, Kelce had spent time partying in the French Quarter before the bowl game. The night before the game, he and his teammates were hit with a surprise drug test that left him “dead in the water.” Kelce failed the test for marijuana and was given a one-year suspension by the NCAA.

Kelce recalls being “down in the dumps” and admits, “I didn’t really think much of myself.” The support of his family in his darkest times was the first step toward his potential redemption in New Orleans this season, 15 years later.

“I told him it’s a great learning opportunity,” said Ed Kelce, Travis’ father. “Live with it. Grow from it. Learn from it.”

Jason Kelce also sparked a turnaround for his troubled little brother. Their mother remembers Jason telling Travis, “Look, you’re living with me. You’re going to be in my house, I’m going to know everything you’re doing, and that’s all there is to it.”

The brothers shared a room for the next year in a house with several Cincinnati teammates. Though the move did not curb all of Travis’ behavior, it kept him focused on football. He broke out after switching from quarterback to tight end in 2011, and his brother’s recommendation to Chiefs coach Andy Reid helped him get drafted by Kansas City in 2013.

“When I got hit with what I was going through, I found out how many people were in my corner,”

Kelce said, reflecting on his family. Kelce did not need his mother’s post-AFC championship jab to warn him of the dangers of Bourbon Street that are seared into his memory. Rather, it was a reminder of the exact kind of tough love that got him through those dark times to where he is today.
