The Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs have both released their initial injury reports from Super Bowl LIX this week, but the truth is that they’re not quite what you think they are. Instead of holding practice during the extra bye week provided before Super Bowl week gets underway, both teams instead released estimations of what a practice report would look like if they’d taken the field.
With a week and a half still to go before the big game, both sides should benefit from the ability to rest after big conference championship wins. That means those concerns listed as they are will have a distinct possibility of not being an issue come game time on February 9.
Chiefs initial injury report looks good
The Chiefs had five players listed on the initial injury report, and three of those names should be very familiar to Chiefs fans after seeing them on previous injury lists for the AFC Championship win over the Buffalo Bills.
Quarterback Patrick Mahomes continues to receive treatment on his ankle, but given that he’s playing his best football, no one should be too concerned there. Jaylen Watson is the same with his ankle, and he’s continued to receive a cautious dose of playing time as he works his way back from surgery. Jawaan Taylor remains on the injured list due to his knee.
Following the 32-29 win over Buffalo, two new Chiefs have been mentioned on the injured list: running back Kareem Hunt and safety Bryan Cook. Both players are dealing with quad injuries. Cook left the game and then re-entered fairly quickly after receiving attention on the sideline early in the AFCCG. Hunt led the team in carries and rushing yards on Sunday and has put in a heavy load for the Chiefs since signing with the team in September.
Eagles injury report has 10 players
The Eagles’ initial injury estimation has 10 total players listed, but two of those are for veteran rest and almost of the injuries are considered to be minor.
Running back Kenny Gainwell is dealing with a concussion, which is a primary injury to watch here. Such injuries can prove difficult to predict, so even with more than a week before the game, his condition will be one to watch.
Punter Britain Covey was listed as limited (again, if practice were to be held) with a neck, while every other player listed was classified as DNP. That includes wide receivers Devonta Smith (hamstring) and A.J. Brown (rest) as well as running back Saquon Barkley (rest). Landon Dickerson’s knee will be another injury to watch given his importance to the team, but it’s hard to see him missing any time at all.
As for others on the list, Brett Toth (knee), Cam Jurgens (back), Dallas Goedert (ankle), and Moro Ojomo (shoulder) round out the rest.
