Patrick Mahomes is under fire for bending the rules. And now Taylor Swift is being accused of helping the Kansas City Chiefs totally break them.
Mahomes has been harshly criticized for exploiting the NFL’s inarguably unfair rules slanted toward protecting quarterbacks to his advantage. In the Divisional Round win over the Houston Texans, he drew two 15-yard penalties and attempted to entrap defenders into another one. On one occasion the quarterback sat down in the middle of the field after a scramble and another he intentionally slowed up before going out of bounds and then dramatically flailed his body as though he had been violently shoved.
In the NBA, these plays are called flops. Mahomes is too good to stoop to such a level. All eyes will be on him – and the referees – when the Chiefs host the Buffalo Bills in the AFC Championship Game Sunday at Arrowhead Stadium.
But ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith doesn’t think Mahomes is alone in creating favorable calls for the Chiefs. On First Take this week he said the star power of Travis Kelce’s girlfriend and the Chiefs attempt at an unprecedented third consecutive Super Bowl is at work as well.
“It’s uncomfortable but we’ll say it,” Smith said. … hinting at the outcomes of games being rigged. “We’ll bring up the fact that Patrick Mahomes has box office appeal. We’ll bring up the fact that Taylor Swift being a Chiefs fan doesn’t hurt. That doesn’t mean the officials go out there and intentionally do this stuff, but it ain’t like the audience doesn’t have a reason to say, ‘What the hell is going on here?'”
Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans voiced his frustration, alluding to a perceived bias in the officiating.
Said Ryan, “We knew going into this game, man, that it was ‘Us vs. Everybody.'”
Denver Broncos cornerback Patrick Surtain also chimed in, referencing the Mahomes penalty with a post on Twitter, “Cmon man, what are we supposed to do when he’s sliding?”
