BREAKING NEWS : Lions rule out rookie cornerback, elevate defensive depth from practice squad

DETROIT — Ennis Rakestraw returned to practice to end the week. But the Detroit Lions did not activate the rookie cornerback from injured reserve ahead of their divisional-round showdown against the Washington Commanders.

Rakestraw continues to work inside his 21-day window from a hamstring injury. He was sidelined by an illness for two practices to start the week, and will have to wait to see if his playoff debut will come before his rookie season closes.

Lions head coach Dan Campbell sounded confident about getting the second-round rookie back before enjoying the first-round bye. Campbell and the Lions will have fellow rookie cornerback Terrion Arnold back, though.

Arnold was carted off in the Week 18 win. But he was a full participant in practice all week, and is good to go against the Commanders.

To help fill the depth on the defense, the Lions have elevated defensive lineman Chris Smith and cornerback Stantley Thomas-Oliver for Saturday night’s game. Smith and Thomas-Oliver both have seen action this season, with the defensive lineman bouncing between the main roster and practice squad all year long.
