The Chicago Blackhawks are in a tough way right now, having lost three of their last four games, including blowing a 2-0 lead on Saturday night against the Edmonton Oilers.
They faced the second team from Alberta on Monday night, as the Calgary Flames came to town for the first time this season. The Flames entered the contest with a 2-1 record in their last three games, adding to their impressive season that began with not many expecting them to compete for a playoff berth.
The Flames continued their winning ways on Monday, defeating the Blackhawks by a 5-2 final score to improve to 21-14-7; Chicago is now 14-28-2.
Calgary scored the game’s opening goal just 1:14 into the contest thanks to Jakob Pelletier, his first of what would be a two-goal performance on the night. But the Blackhawks responded almost immediately, as Louis Crevier scored his second goal just 1:24 later.
The Flames scored twice more in the opening period thanks to Pelletier and Mikael Backlund, and took their 3-1 lead into the first intermission.
Jake Bean increased Calgary’s lead to 4-1 with his second goal of the season. Meanwhile, young Blackhawks phenom forward Connor Bedard once again halved the Flames lead with his 12th goal.
However, Yegor Sharangovich restored the three-goal lead for Calgary by scoring shorthanded.
That would do it for the scoring, as the Flames prevented Chicago from cutting into their lead any further.
#1. Seth Jones
Chicago’s top defenseman has struggled like the rest of his teammates this season, and he came into the contest with a porous -9 rating. His performance on Monday did him no favors, as he finished with a team-worst -4 rating.
His brutal giveaway on a careless pass in the neutral zone in the second period directly led to Sharangovich’s goal, which increased Calgary’s lead to 5-2.
He immediately dug the puck out of the net and swatted it away in frustration as a collective groan rang out from the fans at United Center.
#2. Petr Mrazek
While the Blackhawks goaltender finished with 31 saves, Mrazek didn’t make the saves he needed to.
Both goals he allowed to Pelletier he’d love a second opportunity on, especially the first, as it was a short side shot from the right faceoff circle.
He then gave up a juicy rebound to Pelletier in the slot, which he capitalized on for his second goal of the opening 20 minutes.
#3. Tyler Bertuzzi
While the first-year Blackhawks forward has provided a physical element to Chicago’s lineup along with some offense, Bertuzzi was nowhere to be found in terms of offensive production against the Flames.
He also finished with a -3 rating, tied for second-worst on the team during Monday’s loss.
The Blackhawks will look to bounce back when they face the Nashville Predators next at Bridgestone Arena on Thursday.
