BREAKING: Packers sign QB Sean Clifford to active roster

Packers sign QB Sean Clifford to active roster - Acme Packing Company

To take full advantage of the third quarterback rule for the postseason, the Green Bay Packers have signed their practice squad quarterback Sean Clifford to their 53-man roster for the playoffs. Even if a third quarterback on the active roster is inactive for the game, he is allowed to enter the game as long as the two quarterbacks ahead of him drop out due to injury. Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst has stated in the past that Green Bay would think about adding a third quarterback to their active roster if they made the postseason.

Even though the Packers have yet to place receiver Christian Watson (knee) on the injured reserve, Green Bay already had an open roster spot entering this week. Because of that, there was no corresponding roster move made to elevate Clifford from the practice squad.

Interestingly, the Packers didn’t make a single practice squad elevation this week, even though they were allotted two. This only makes sense if Green Bay’s roster is in good enough shape that they believe they can make up a full team with the players on their 53.

Considering that safety Zayne Anderson (concussion) and Watson have already been ruled out, this must mean that the coaching staff feels relatively good about defensive end Brenton Cox Jr. (foot), tackle Andre Dillard (concussion), defensive tackle T.J. Slaton (ankle), middle linebacker Quay Walker (ankle) and safety Evan Williams (quadricep), who were listed as questionable on Friday for this week’s action against the Philadelphia Eagles.
