On Wednesday, Kansas City Chiefs\u2019 head coach Andy Reid announced that his backup quarterback Carson Wentz will take Patrick Mahomes\u2019 place in Sunday\u2019s regular-season finale against the Denver Broncos at Empower Field.<\/p>\n
And while Mahomes won\u2019t be making direct preparations to play in Denver, offensive coordinator Matt Nagy said that the starting quarterback will be getting ready for the postseason by stepping back to see how the team\u2019s offense works from a coach\u2019s perspective.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Nagy and Wentz will be hard at work.<\/p>\n
\u201dHe made a little joke yesterday in practice that this was the most he\u2019s talked in one day all year,\u201d recalled the coordinator on Thursday. \u201cWe kind of chuckled about that.\u201d<\/p>\n
Nagy said that like the head coach \u2014 who has described himself as one of Wentz\u2019s \u201cbiggest fans\u201d \u2014 he\u2019s rooting for the veteran quarterback to succeed.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019ve been following Carson \u2014 we all have \u2014 from the day he came into this league,\u201d said Nagy, \u201c[but] not really knowing him until this year. To see how he\u2019s handled himself as an unbelievable No. 2 and backup \u2014 and what he did in training camp?<\/p>\n
\u201cNow he\u2019s going to get an opportunity. You really appreciate people like him. Literally, this is not different for him because he\u2019s gonna start. It\u2019s not any different than any week that he goes into.\u201d<\/p>\n
Nagy has been around long enough to know there aren\u2019t many players like him.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey\u2019re out there, but they\u2019re hard to find,\u201d he declared, \u201cespecially when you\u2019re as talented as he is. So as a coach, you get pumped up \u2014 and you want to go out there and do everything you can to help him go out and lead the team to a win.\u201d<\/p>\n
Linebackers coach Brendan Daly also counts himself among Wentz\u2019s admirers.<\/p>\n
\u201dHe was one of the first people I ran into this morning when I got here,\u201d he revealed. \u201cI thought to myself, \u2018You know what? That\u2019s pretty cool that he\u2019s going to get an opportunity this week.\u2019<\/p>\n
\u201cPeople wouldn\u2019t know he\u2019s in here at 6 a.m. every day through the course of the year when he\u2019s not preparing to be the starter. But it was cool to see him this morning in that same environment \u2014 and know he\u2019s going to get an opportunity this week.
