The\u00a0Dallas Cowboys\u00a0franchise-tagged star wide receiver George Pickens this offseason, and\u00a0trade speculation\u00a0hasn\u2019t slowed down in the process.<\/p>\n

Pickens will play on the\u00a0$27.29 million\u00a0tag unless the Cowboys find a trade partner. Now, there\u2019s another wrinkle, as Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer admitted that Pickens will skip participation for voluntary offseason workouts.<\/p>\n

Schottenheimer revealed that on Saturday, when he spoke with the media at rookie minicamp,\u00a0via The Athletic\u2019s Jon Machota. As for when Pickens will join the team for offseason workouts, Schottenheimer said he\u2019s \u201cnot sure when that\u2019s going to be\u201d\u00a0via Cowboys writer Clarence Hill Jr.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ll be excited whenever I see him,\u201d Schottenheimer told reporters\u00a0via ESPN\u2019s Todd Archer.<\/p>\n

Schottenheimer also ruled out a trade and said the Cowboys haven\u2019t discussed a trade with Pickens,\u00a0per Machota.\u00a0The coach also indicated no surprise over Pickens taking the franchise tag,\u00a0as Machota wrote via X.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s not what we plan on doing,\u201d Schottenheimer told reporters via Machota. \u201cWe see George being a part of this football team, having a great 2026 and hopefully beyond.\u201d<\/p>\n

Another Contract Holdout in Dallas Could Brew<\/h2>\n

The Cowboys have seen this script before \u2014 a star player wants a bigger contract and holds out into training camp.<\/p>\n

While Schottenheimer talked about voluntary offseason workouts, Pickens could be on the trajectory to miss mandatory team activities if he doesn\u2019t get a new deal. It happened as recently as last year when linebacker Micah Parsons didn\u2019t participate in training camp, and the Cowboys traded him to the\u00a0Green Bay Packers.<\/p>\n

Previously, Cowboys star\u00a0 wide receiver CeeDee Lamb missed training camp in 20204 until he signed his four-year,\u00a0$136 million\u00a0contract extension. The Cowboys likewise moved through similar scenarios with former offensive lineman Zach Martin in 2023, former running back Ezekiel Eliott in 2019 and former wide receiver Dez Bryant in 2015.<\/p>\n

Pickens and the Cowboys don\u2019t have until training camp to finalize a deal in this case because the\u00a0NFL\u00a0has a July 15 deadline for franchise-tagged players to reach a long-term contract extension.<\/p>\n

Brian Schottenheimer Confident in Year Two With George Pickens<\/h2>\n

While Schottenheimer gave some details on Pickens\u2019 status with the team, the coach expressed confidence over Pickens\u2019 upcoming second year in the Cowboys offense from an on-field standpoint.<\/p>\n

\u201cI just think where he can continue to go and grow is scary, because what he did last year was amazing,\u201d Schottenheimer said via Machota. \u201cThe more you watch the film, the more you see it. You\u2019re just kind of like, \u2018Whoa.\u2019 It\u2019s just different.\u201d<\/p>\n

Pickens produced a career year with the Cowboys with 93 receptions for 1,429 yards and nine touchdowns. The former\u00a0Pittsburgh Steelers\u00a0standout also made his first Pro Bowl in the process.<\/p>\n

Brian Schottenheimer Backs Cowboys\u2019 Previous Stance on George Pickens<\/h2>\n

Schottenheimer comments on Saturday simply doubled down on the Cowboys\u2019 standing with Pickens. Cowboys co-owner Stephen Jones previousy claimed that the Cowboys expect to keep Pickens for 2026.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have no intention of moving George,\u201d Jones told reporters on April 23\u00a0via DallasCowboys.com\u2019s Patrik Walker. \u201cWe\u2019re fired up about him signing his [tag], because it means he\u2019s ready to come in here and get to work. \u2026 We have zero intention of moving [him].\u201d<\/p>\n

As Walker noted, co-owner Jerry Jones expressed plans to keep Pickens in March, and Schottenheimer spoke similarly before Saturday\u2019s press conference.<\/p>\n
