FOXBORO \u2014 Patriots quarterback Drake Maye completely understands all of the talk and concern about his right shoulder injury this week.<\/p>\n
The 23-year-old quarterback, just 11 days away from playing in his first Super Bowl, was asked if he was surprised by the conversation around the injury to his throwing shoulder.<\/p>\n
Maye was listed as \u201climited\u201d with a right shoulder injury in Wednesday\u2019s projected injury report.<\/p>\n
\u201cSurprised? No. I wouldn\u2019t say surprised,\u201d Maye said. \u201cIt\u2019s the right shoulder of a starting quarterback on an NFL team.\u201d<\/p>\n
Correction: The starting quarterback on an NFL team playing Super Bowl LX.<\/p>\n
So, yeah, Maye\u2019s shoulder warrants some conversation ahead of next Sunday\u2019s game against the Seahawks.<\/p>\n
\u201cI feel good \u2014 was able to do some of the jog through, so feeling good. Looking forward to being ready to go. This is the game you dream of playing in, so looking forward to getting out there and getting a chance to play in the Super Bowl. \u2026<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019ll do whatever I can to feel 100%, and I\u2019m sure I\u2019ll get, if not there, as close as I can or 99 or do whatever I can to make sure I\u2019m throwing and do whatever I can to help the team win.<\/p>\n
Maye did not throw the ball during the early portion of practice open to the media. He said he did throw the ball during Thursday\u2019s practice, however.<\/p>\n
\u201cDid I throw today? Yeah, we went through a normal practice,\u201d Maye said. \u201cDid some reps and did some things where I\u2019m looking forward to trying to get some more reps here and there and feel it out.\u201d<\/p>\n
Head coach Mike Vrabel addressed Maye\u2019s shoulder injury earlier in the day during his press conference.<\/p>\n
Vrabel said the injury occurred during the Patriots\u2019 AFC Championship Game win over the Broncos and was not preexisting.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe would have been listed on the injury report before (Wednesday),\u201d Vrabel said.<\/p>\n
Maye took a hard hit from Broncos safety Talanoa Hufanga on a 13-yard run midway through the third quarter. Maye completed a pass to wide receiver Mack Hollins two plays later, delivered a stiff arm on a game-clinching scramble in the fourth quarter and finished the game.<\/p>\n
Vrabel was asked about his level of concern about Maye\u2019s shoulder injury.<\/p>\n
\u201cNot much,\u201d Vrabel said \u201cI try not to have a whole lot of concern. I just want to try to prepare the football team, make sure that everybody\u2019s ready, that we all have a plan, not to surprise anybody and make sure that our guys are focusing on the first and second down plan. We\u2019ve tried to map out the week here, week and a half, and not look at the end of it, but focus on what we can do today. Try to learn our opponent and be ready for first and second down.\u201d<\/p>\n
Vrabel also said the team wasn\u2019t going to do anything differently this week, despite Maye\u2019s injury.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think we\u2019re going to operate as we normally would here on a Wednesday,\u201d Vrabel said. \u201cEven though it\u2019s Thursday, this is a Wednesday for us, and that\u2019s kind of how we\u2019ll approach it.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Patriots will practice against Friday before a day off on Saturday. They\u2019ll travel to San Francisco for Super Bowl LX on Sunday.<\/p>\n
Vrabel said that he\u2019s seen Maye\u2019s maturity grow throughout the season.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think just as we\u2019ve gone through this entire year in this program, and the more that he\u2019s been out there and the games have kind of built up on us that, really, we\u2019ve done a nice job in those situations,\u201d Vrabel said when asked about \u201cbig moments.\u201d \u201cI think he\u2019s improved in them, and he\u2019s a big part of why we\u2019re here, obviously.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Patriots finished the season 14-3 and have beaten the Chargers, Texans and Broncos in the postseason. They\u2019ll face a fourth top-tier defense in the Seahawks next Sunday.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
