THE Green Bay Packers have hired a former NFL head coach who was fired just weeks ago to be their new defensive coordinator.<\/p>\n
The\u00a0Packers\u00a0have moved swiftly to replace Jeff Hafley after he was\u00a0named head coach of the Miami Dolphins\u00a0last week.<\/p>\n

Hafley was in charge of the Packers\u2019 defense for two years under head coach\u00a0Matt LaFleur.<\/p>\n
Now LaFleur has found his replacement in former\u00a0Arizona Cardinals\u00a0head coach\u00a0Jonathan Gannon.<\/p>\n
Per ESPN\u2019s Adam Schefter on X, \u201cPackers are hiring former Cardinals HC Jonathan Gannon as their defensive coordinator, per source.\u201d<\/p>\n
Gannon was fired by the Cardinals at the end of the 2025\u00a0NFL\u00a0season after three dismal years in charge.<\/p>\n
He won 15 games and lost 36 over that three-season period, with their 3-14 record this year the final straw.<\/p>\n
While his\u00a0time as a head coach in the NFL\u00a0wasn\u2019t fruitful, Gannon was once one of the hottest defensive coordinators in the league.<\/p>\n
His time as DC with the\u00a0Philadelphia Eagles\u00a0is what saw him hired by the Cardinals in the first place.<\/p>\n
In fact, just two days after he and the Eagles lost the Super Bowl in 2023, he\u00a0was named Arizona\u2019s head coach.<\/p>\n
Gannon\u2019s defense that year finished second in the NFL overall in yards allowed and eighth in points allowed.<\/p>\n
A source told\u00a0ESPN\u00a0that LaFleur\u2019s decision to hire Gannon was partly due to his experience as a head coach.<\/p>\n
The source said, \u201c[He] loved the fact that [Gannon has] sat in the [head coach\u2019s] chair.\u201d<\/p>\n
Another source also told the network that Gannon was subject to interest from two other NFL teams.<\/p>\n
Interestingly, it was the league\u2019s iconic brothers\u00a0John\u00a0and\u00a0Jim Harbaugh\u00a0who were reportedly keen on Gannon\u2019s services.<\/p>\n
John Harbaugh recently took over as the new head coach of the\u00a0New York Giants\u00a0after being fired by the\u00a0Baltimore Ravens.<\/p>\n
He was looking to add a new defensive coordinator to his staff, with that role now reportedly handed to\u00a0Tennessee Titans\u00a0DC Dennard Wilson.<\/p>\n
In a strange circle of events, Jim Harbaugh just\u00a0lost his DC Jesse Minter to the Ravens\u00a0for their vacant head coaching post after firing his brother.<\/p>\n
He and the\u00a0Los Angeles Chargers\u00a0remain in the search for a new DC while the Packers now have their man.<\/p>\n
