The veteran saw his 2023 season come to a premature end last Oct. 29 in Miami when, on the first play of the fourth quarter, he suffered a torn ACL in his right knee. At the time of his injury, he was leading the Patriots with 37 catches for 406 yards and four touchdowns.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m just very thankful,\u201d Bourne said. \u201cIt was a journey, and when I think about it, it\u2019s heartwarming to be back. I feel like I\u2019m back to where I was, and doing exercises, doing body compositions, seeing where my body was.<\/p>\n

Baker\u2019s return yet to come<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n

Rookie receiver Javon Baker<\/b> started last week\u2019s game with a bang, returning the opening kickoff for 45 yards. It was the longest kick return of the season for the Patriots. However, he muffed the second, and was eventually replaced by running back JaMycal Hasty<\/b>.<\/p>\n

On Monday, coach Jerod Mayo<\/b> explained the decision to yank Baker.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe didn\u2019t execute the way that we all had hoped he would,\u201d Mayo said. \u201cI know it was a big return. Even on that big return, it was one of those situations where, \u2018Is he coming out? Is he not coming out?\u2019 And same thing with the second kickoff return.\u201d<\/p>\n

On Friday, special teams coach Jeremy Springer <\/b>expanded on the decision, and took responsibility for not coaching up Baker properly.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s certain things back there, from a communication standpoint, that I can do better throughout the week so that he\u2019s more prepared for certain kicks that you\u2019re getting with the temperature, with the wind,\u201d Springer said.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s something that we\u2019ve really worked on this week and he\u2019ll continue to get better,\u201d he added. \u201cDefinitely not giving up on the guy.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen the situation calls for it, we\u2019ll have him back there at times. Once we start feeling completely comfortable giving him more exposure to certain type of kicks, then he\u2019ll be our guy. I never want to put him in a bad situation because I know how talented he is.\u201d<\/p>\n

On Friday, the Patriots had five kickers in for tryouts: Jose Borregales <\/b>(Miami), Tanner Brown<\/b> (Oklahoma State), Lucas Havrisik<\/b> (Arizona), Noah Rauschenberg <\/b>(North Texas), and Cade York<\/b> (Louisiana State).<\/p>\n

It\u2019s unlikely New England is looking for a replacement for Joey Slye<\/b>, who is an impressive 19 of 22 on field goal attempts (including 3 of 4 from 50-plus) and 15 of 16 on extra points. But it never hurts to keep your emergency lists updated in case something does happen.<\/p>\n
