In his interview with Easton Jr., Long discussed his role as a remote analyst for NFL Christmas Gameday on Netflix on Thursday, December 25th, and his thoughts on Travis Kelce potentially retiring after Patrick Mahomes’ devastating knee injury.<\/p>\n

Mahomes’ Week 15 season-ending injury requiring surgery to repair his ACL and LCL won’t likely have him back immediately for the start of the 2026 season. Long shared his thoughts on this, which could affect Kelce’s future playing.<\/p>\n
“Well, there was a book I read when I was younger. It’s called ‘Where the Red Fern Grows’. It was about, I don’t really know what it was about, but there were two dogs in it, and they were so dang close,” said Long, “They did everything together, they hunted together, they ate together, they slept together. And once, one of the dogs got hurt on a barbed-wire fence. The dog didn’t make it. It’s one of the saddest stories I’ve ever read, and then the other dog couldn’t eat anymore. It was sad.”<\/p>\n
Mahomes and Kelce have been one of the league’s greatest duos since the 2018 season. The prospect of them returning to form with a healthy Mahomes is a sight many Chiefs fans would love to see after a disappointing 2025 season.<\/p>\n
“Is that what happens in Kansas City,” said Long, “or are we going to see Travis Kelce, like he did this past offseason, train his butt off, come in the best shape of his life, be a top-five producing tight end in football, and wait for his homeboy (Patrick Mahomes) to show back up at quarterback? They can take some names and kick some butts, because people are taking their shots on the\u00a0Kansas City Chiefs\u00a0right now.”<\/p>\n
