Kansas City Chiefs<\/strong> rookie wide receiver Xavier Worthy seemed destined for a breakout game during the opening stages of Sunday’s 30-21 loss to the Buffalo Bills<\/strong>. In a thrilling first quarter, Worthy <\/strong>hauled in four catches for 61 yards and a touchdown, setting a career-high in receptions while adding seven rushing yards as part of a dynamic offensive package that featured him in motion and out of the backfield.<\/p>\n

Yet, despite his electric start, Worthy<\/strong>‘s role inexplicably diminished as the game progressed. Early in the second quarter, he streaked wide open down the sideline for what should have been a big gain.<\/p>\n

Mahomes take the blame<\/h2>\n

However, the pass was ruled incomplete as Worthy couldn’t get both feet in bounds, with Patrick Mahomes later admitting his throw led the rookie too close to the sideline.<\/p>\n

“I mean, it’s probably just me just throwing it more in bounds to [Worthy] that’s wide open for a touchdown,” Mahomes said.<\/p>\n

“So, if I throw it in bounds, it’s a walk in touchdown. I have to be better there.<\/p>\n

“Xavier came out hot, making plays. Hopefully we can keep him more involved throughout the entirety of the game. That goes with me giving him chances.”<\/p>\n

This marked the second straight week Mahomes<\/strong> and Worthy narrowly missed connecting on a potential game-changing deep ball.<\/p>\n

Last week, the Chiefs<\/strong> overcame a similar missed opportunity in a victory over Denver. This time, the misfire proved more consequential in a tightly contested game.<\/p>\n

After the incomplete pass, Worthy <\/strong>disappeared from the offense. He didn’t see another target for the rest of the game, a curious decision given his early success.<\/p>\n

The Chiefs<\/strong>‘ offense faltered in the second half, managing only one scoring drive, leaving many to question why Worthy wasn’t utilized more.
