Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones told CNBC Thursday the decision to trade Micah Parsons ultimately came down to simple math.<\/p>\n
Jones appeared on CNBC\u2019s\u00a0\u201cClosing Bell: Overtime\u201d\u00a0to talk about the\u00a0Dallas Cowboys\u2019 record $12.5 billion valuation as the team kicks off the 2025-2026 season.<\/p>\n
On August 28, the Green Bay Packers signed Parsons to a four-year,\u00a0$186 million contract extension, $136 million of which is guaranteed, according to Spotrac. The deal came after a months-long feud with the Cowboys over his contract and makes Parsons the highest-paid non-quarterback in NFL history, according to\u00a0ESPN.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf you look at what his numbers are in terms of his compensation over the next five years… and then you look at those draft picks that we got, and you look at what those numbers could pay to other players, you\u2019ll see about five of maybe the very best players as you can get in the NFL, for what one gets in Micah,\u201d Jones told CNBC\u2019s Michael Ozanian Thursday.<\/p>\n
Jones said it wasn\u2019t personal, adding he likes the 26-year old defensive end and thinks he\u2019s a great player.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou know our game has availability issues. In other words, if you\u2019re hurt, you don\u2019t play.\u00a0Well the odds of having more for that much compensation, the odds of getting more people playing on the field every game as opposed to having it all on one or two, it\u2019s an opportunity for us,\u201d Jones said. \u201cIt fits us right now.\u201d<\/p>\n

Parsons, a four-time Pro Bowler, is in the final year of his rookie contract, worth about\u00a0$24 million, according to Spotrac.<\/p>\n
He has established himself as one of the top defensive players in the league, recording\u00a0more than 12 sacks\u00a0in each of the past four seasons.<\/p>\n
