BEREA, Ohio \u2014 Dillon Gabriel has a lot on his plate.<\/p>\n
The Browns have given a lot of complex concepts to Gabriel, one of their two rookie QBs, to study and try out from spring until now in their new-look offense.<\/p>\n
Now, he\u2019s also dealing with some hamstring soreness and was limited because of it on day 10 of Browns training camp Monday.<\/p>\n
There\u2019s only so much he can control with the injury (which wasn\u2019t known at the time he spoke to the media prior to Monday\u2019s practice), but in terms of having his playbook plate filled, it\u2019s something Gabriel has gotten used to, even before his first NFL season.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think a lot of programs I\u2019ve been a part of have done that and I think you try to put a lot of stress offensively to see how much your team can handle,\u201d Gabriel said. \u201cAnd for me it\u2019s something that I\u2019m accustomed to and you want to stress early and know when to pull back.\u201d<\/p>\n
Plus, picking through a lot on his plate is supposed to be a strength.<\/p>\n
Gabriel\u2019s processing is part of what made him an alluring option to the Browns when they selected him in the third round back in April.<\/p>\n
That sort of instant decision-making and pre-snap ability was honed playing in different systems at three different college stops: UCF, Oklahoma and Oregon, in 64 games over six seasons.<\/p>\n
\u201cStudy habits for me are huge,\u201d Gabriel said. \u201cI think you want to approach it a certain way … coach always talks about an elephant, eating it one bite at a time. And for me, you got to do it that way.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou got to break it down, make it easy to learn and memorize, but then also when you\u2019re out there it\u2019s got to be able to translate as well. So whenever you can translate the classroom to the field, that\u2019s been huge for me. And that\u2019s whether it\u2019s walkthroughs, going through the cadence and calls, getting used to that.\u201d<\/p>\n But it hasn\u2019t been seamless for Gabriel, and he\u2019s struggled at times.<\/p>\n Due to his hamstring soreness, Gabriel was limited on Monday, the team\u2019s final practice session open to fans and the last one before they head to joint practice in Carolina on Wednesday.<\/p>\n Gabriel got three 7-on-7 snaps and completed all three of his passes, but in his lone 11-on-11 period was just 1-for-2 due to a drop by Diontae Johnson over the middle on an in route.<\/p>\n Throughout camp, Gabriel (5-11, 205) has struggled with accuracy, however and has appeared to have timing issues with receivers. He\u2019s also had multiple passes batted down at the line of scrimmage, the most-recent coming from D-tackle Shelby Harris on Saturday.<\/p>\n At his best in these practices, Gabriel has gotten quick yardage through slants and quick swings, showing off good ball placement on digs and quick outs, and even being able to thread some tight windows. At the same time, he\u2019s not yet had one practice performance that has really popped or allowed him to separate in the competition, even while he was getting more reps with Kenny Pickett suffering his own hamstring injury last week.<\/p>\n But as the Browns have continued to pile more on his plate (and leave this QB competition open), it\u2019s all about the learning experience for the coaching staff.<\/p>\n \u201cThere\u2019s plays that are set up for you and you let it rip and it\u2019s there,\u201d head coach Kevin Stefanski said. \u201cThere\u2019s times that things aren\u2019t there. And I think the big thing is learning from every single one of those reps. Like I can think of certain reps where you got to move in the pocket and you got to run out of the pocket. You got to go scramble and get as much as we can get and get down and protect yourself. That\u2019s real football.<\/p>\n \u201cSo we\u2019re trying as hard as we can to mimic that in these settings and know that you\u2019re going to have some plays that you want back, but the bottom line is you have to learn from those plays, I think he\u2019s doing that.\u201d<\/p>\n The Browns haven\u2019t yet revealed their plans for Wednesday\u2019s joint practice in Carolina against the Panthers or their first preseason game on Friday. In their first mandatory, yet unofficial, preseason depth chart, Gabriel is listed as the third QB behind Joe Flacco and Pickett.<\/p>\n While Gabriel\u2019s hamstring injury has thrown another wrench of unknown into this QB competition, however, he is able to perform in that practice and game will be the next step in his development.<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019ve been prepared for the moment, so I\u2019m excited for that and know that these moments add up,\u201d Gabriel said. \u201cbut each moment is its own situation and one that you want to take advantage of.\u201d<\/p>\n The pile on his plate is only getting higher.<\/p>\n Dillon Gabriel continues to be focused on progress.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":29678,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[3],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-29677","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-cleveland-browns"],"yoast_head":"\n\n\n\n\n![\"How](\"https:\/\/www.cleveland.com\/resizer\/v2\/HN7O4NQFBNCX3MSQONAM4P5N6Q.JPG?auth=9b9a3dc27e921e56e8ef6200577e0653d70e9f159d79e5f835c404cb906ccc93&width=1280&quality=90\")
