Entering his third NFL season, Jack Campbell is undoubtedly one of the focal points of the Detroit Lions\u2019 defense.<\/p>\n

Operating in the middle of the field as the team\u2019s MIKE linebacker, he\u2019s become a cerebral leader for Dan Campbell\u2019s squad.<\/p>\n

He\u2019s fully embraced the role of being the quarterback of the defense, and is expected to relay the play-calls made by defensive coordinator Kelvin Sheppard from the sideline this upcoming season. Plus, he\u2019s steadily improved his production on the field. He led all Lions defenders with 131 total tackles a season ago.<\/p>\n

This progression from Campbell \u2013 both on and off the field \u2013 is not just because of his defensive counterparts pushing him, either. It\u2019s also a byproduct of the high-IQ battles he faces on a daily basis in practice against his own offense.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was one of these guys that was a little bit ahead of everything mentally and now to see where his growth is, it\u2019s impressive,\u201d Dan Campbell expressed. \u201cHe\u2019s done an outstanding job. He\u2019s got a good feel of the game, he understands the game, he knows what we\u2019re trying to do defensively, he did with (former Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn) AG and even more so now with Shep.\u201d<\/p>\n

There\u2019s no denying the fact that Jack Campbell is a highly intelligent player, and he uses those smarts to come up with stops more often than not. It\u2019s why the Detroit head coach is expecting even more out of the linebacker in 2025.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re going to give him a lot more, he and Alex (Anzalone) both,\u201d Dan Campbell said. \u201cA lot more flexibility to get us into the play because he also studies. He studies the opponent, he\u2019s studying our offense and he\u2019s trying to get any little key that he can and that just makes us better.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo, he\u2019s, look, it\u2019s one of the reasons we drafted him, is for that. Some of these teams that have this – some of these MIKE linebackers you think of that, man, they\u2019re running, hitting and smart as a whip and that\u2019s why we like Jack.\u201d<\/p>\n

That intelligence is being tested \u2013 and fine-tuned \u2013 by none other than Lions quarterback Jared Goff, a seasoned veteran who is also readily equipped with a cerebral approach to the game. Their daily \u201cchess matches\u201d in practice have become a sight to see in Allen Park.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is fun to watch,\u201d the Lions head man said of the daily battles between Jack Campbell and Goff. \u201cYou watch both sides go back and forth and then if something happens day one, whether it didn\u2019t happen at the end of practice, you figured it out and were able to answer back, it\u2019s going to happen in the afternoon practice or the next day\u2019s practice where somebody\u2019s going to adjust. Defense got you, offense has got to adjust, so it is good.\u201d<\/p>\n

To Dan Campbell, this high level of competition between the two sides only helps elevate the quality of play for both the offense and the defense.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd then, I\u2019ve said this before, that\u2019s how you get better. You just continue to raise the floor. Everybody gets better and better and better,\u201d Campbell expressed. \u201cAnd then, pretty soon when you do enough of it, your weaknesses begin to go away on both sides of the ball.\u201d<\/p>\n

Due to Goff’s influence, Campbell has also seen himself make strides with quickly picking up on reads from the offense.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s seen a lot of football, and he\u2019s played at a really high level. He\u2019s one heck of a player,\u201d Campbell said of the Detroit signal-caller. \u201cSo, it\u2019s fun to get to go up against him and then ask what he was seeing, what he was thinking and then him to come over to me and then ask who pressured on that play. Just to kind of figure out why he\u2019s making this throw here, why is he not making that throw there. So, it\u2019s been fun, but he\u2019s just one heck of a competitor and a great leader.\u201d<\/p>\n

Along with benefitting from Goff\u2019s veteran savvy, Campbell has also greatly benefitted from going head-to-head with the likes of tight end Sam LaPorta and running back David Montgomery on a daily basis. Campbell, for one, believes that LaPorta is \u201cone of the best route-running tight ends in the NFL.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI might get beat, I might win, it don\u2019t matter,\u201d Campbell said of going up against LaPorta in practice. \u201cI feel like the biggest improvement I see in myself is when I do things I don\u2019t want to do and I go up against people who are going to push me to be better. And I feel like Sam does that, David Montgomery does that, the whole offense does it. And again, that\u2019s for me, when I go back and I fail, learn from it and when I\u2019m successful, it don\u2019t really matter.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
