BEREA, OH \u2013 Earlier in June,\u00a0Cleveland Browns\u00a0defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz dropped a famous\u00a0\u201cSpider-Man\u201d\u00a0line while discussing defensive end and $40 million man\u00a0Myles Garrett.<\/p>\n
With great power, comes great responsibility.<\/em><\/p>\n \u201cSo that would make him my Uncle Ben?\u201d Garrett said with a smile Tuesday following the Browns\u2019 first minicamp practice.<\/p>\n Schwartz charged his star player to have the best season of his career now that he\u2019s the\u00a0highest-paid defensive player in football\u00a0(and the second-highest non-quarterback behind\u00a0Cincinnati Bengals\u00a0receiver Ja\u2019Marr Chase). Production has never been lacking for Garrett, as he\u2019s racked up 102.5 career sacks since the Browns drafted him first overall in 2017 (60 of those have come in the last four seasons).<\/p>\n Growing as a leader is the next step for the 29-year-old and is something the Browns have discussed from owner Jimmy Haslam to head coach Kevin Stefanski.<\/p>\n \u201cThat\u2019s what\u2019s been laid out for me,\u201d Garrett said.<\/p>\n Garrett\u2019s appearance at minicamp came four months removed from his\u00a0trade request\u00a0and the assertion that, given his desire to win, moving on from the Browns and a 3-14 season was necessary.<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019m back and it\u2019s time to go,\u201d said Garrett, who will play on a four-year, $160 million deal with $123 million guaranteed.<\/p>\n Garrett\u2019s teammates understand football is a business. He loves his job and the Browns. But Garrett had to do what he felt was best for him.<\/p>\n \u201cWhat\u2019s best for me and what\u2019s best for this team, eventually that aligned,\u201d Garrett said. \u201cLooking forward to the future of this team and how we can achieve the goals we want to.\u201d<\/p>\n The urgency will have to increase another level to reach that point, said Garrett. Everything feels like it\u2019s \u201creally clicking\u201d on the defensive side of the ball. He wants to set standards and show the heralded rookie class what it takes to win in the NFL. Asked to assess the roster, Garrett replied: \u201cThat\u2019s what minicamp and training camp are for.\u201d<\/p>\n But it wasn\u2019t his best comeback of the day \u2013 by far.
