Kansas City\u2019s fourth-round selection spoke to the media before Saturday\u2019s rookie camp session.<\/p>\n
Most of the Kansas City Chiefs\u2019 fans know that the team\u2019s first-round NFL Draft selection \u2014 former Ohio State tackle Josh Simmons \u2014 is coming back from a patellar tendon tear he suffered in October.<\/p>\n
But Utah State wide receiver Jalen Royals \u2014 taken in the fourth round (133rd overall) \u2014 is also working his way back from an October injury. He missed the second half of last season after tearing a deltoid ligament in his foot.<\/p>\n
Speaking before the team\u2019s rookie minicamp session on Saturday, Royals declared himself fully recovered.<\/p>\n
\u201cI would say it took me a little longer than expected,\u201d he admitted. \u201cIt\u2019s probably a very delicate injury \u2014 deltoid ligament \u2014 and I\u2019m healthy right now. Fully healthy.\u201d<\/p>\n <\/picture> <\/span> Photo by Stacy Revere\/Getty Images<\/cite><\/figure>\n
He was healthy enough for a well-received Senior Bowl week and a strong showing at the NFL Scouting Combine highlighted by a 4.42-second 40-yard dash. Those performances put him firmly on the draft radar \u2014 and Royals is proud of what he was able to do.<\/p>\n
\u201cI was recovering during that time,\u201d he confirmed, \u201cso to even go out there and compete with the top guys while still injured? It just shows a lot of effort and grit for me.\u201d<\/p>\n
Now, Royals is shifting from draft preparation to learning about his new team.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s a lot more movement aspects and stuff like that,\u201d he said of the transition. \u201cYou\u2019re not just running in a straight line. You\u2019re actually running routes or learning plays. The mental aspect comes with that, too.\u201d<\/p>\n
A rookie\u2019s difficulty in learning the Chiefs\u2019 offense is well documented \u2014 and Royals can attest the reputation is earned.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt was very complex,\u201d he said of the playbook. \u201cYou\u2019re dealing with Andy Reid, so it\u2019s very complex offense.\u201d<\/p>\n
To maximize his offensive opportunities in Kansas City, Royals will need to show he can line up in any wide receiver alignment. He\u2019s had some preparation for that.<\/p>\n
\u201cI played X last year,\u201d he recalled, \u201cand I felt like that was the majority of the role. Then, as time [went] by and our coach wanted me to [play] in the slot. [He was] just trying to move me around just for occasions like I\u2019d get in the NFL. I can bounce back and forth.\u201d<\/p>\n
After checking in to the Combine at six feet and 205 pounds, Royals has an idea what kind of NFL wide receiver he wants to be.<\/p>\n <\/picture> <\/span> Photo by Sam Wasson\/Getty Images<\/cite><\/figure>\n
\u201cI try to watch everybody,\u201d he explained. \u201cDavante Adams, A.J. Brown \u2014 you know, the big receivers. So [I] try to piggyback off what they do \u2014 and try to implement it into my game.\u201d<\/p>\n
As a rookie, Royals will also need to implement the NFL\u2019s dynamic kickoff rules into his repertoire. Although he returned seven kickoffs for the Aggies last season, he knows things will be completely different in the NFL. With touchbacks now coming out to the receiving team\u2019s 35-yard line, many more return opportunities will be available.<\/p>\n
\u201cI saw a little bit of it with the new kickoff,\u201d noted Royals, \u201cand it\u2019s not like the old where everybody runs down and [there\u2019s] just a whole bunch of collisions. So it\u2019s definitely going to be a new change for me, because I\u2019m kind of used to the old-school way.\u201d<\/p>\n
Understanding that he has much to learn in a short time, Royals had a specific goal for his first weekend with the team.<\/p>\n
