Stefon Diggs officially became a New England Patriot on Friday when he inked a three-year deal worth $69 million.<\/p>\n
The 31-year-old is set to become the Patriots’ No. 1 target after a season where the team’s receiving leading was tight end Hunter Henry. He joins a wide receiver room that consists of Kendrick Bourne, DeMario Douglas, Ja’Lynn Polk and Mack Hollins.<\/p>\n
Diggs suffered an ACL injury last season on the Houston Texans, injuring himself in a play during a Week 8 matchup with the Indianapolis Colts.<\/p>\n
He was asked about if he expects to be ready to suit up for the Patriots in Week 1.<\/p>\n
“(Expletive), when the whistle blows, we’ll see,” Diggs said.<\/p>\n
“Right now, I’m ahead of schedule,” Diggs continued. “I’m trying to stay ahead of schedule. I pretty much take it day by day. I try not to put the carriage before the house… I’ll let you know, though. We’ll keep playing it by ear.”<\/p>\n
Before getting his season shut down, Diggs caught 47 passes for 496 yards and three touchdowns; he was also on track to collect his fifth consecutive 1,000-yard season.<\/p>\n
Diggs admitted that he knew his injury would impact the deal he negotiated with whoever his new team was going to be. But he added that his six 1,000-plus yard seasons would keep him in competitive territory.<\/p>\n
“I kind of figured [the contract] was going to be around that area, considering I’m coming off the injury, but also the fact that I’m one of the only receivers that had six 1,000-yard seasons consecutively [prior to the injury],” he said. “The production, it’s always been here. I can move the chains. I can do intermediate. I can go deep. I did that all throughout my career. My r\u00e9sum\u00e9 probably speaks for itself, but it was more so the injury that would deter or make the money is what it is.<\/p>\n
“I look at it definitely as an opportunity. What could’ve been, could’ve been. At this point I am where I am, and I’m thankful.”<\/p>\n
