As rumored, Brian Gutekunst was a busy lad on the first day of \u201clegal\u201d tampering, signing guard Aaron Banks and cornerback Nate Hobbs to big deals.<\/p>\n

Cornerback was a major team need, and the offensive line needed a boost after the Philadelphia Eagles exposed their depth, so the signings make a lot of sense.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, the Packers couldn\u2019t make a splash with two of their other major needs: wide receiver and pass rush.<\/p>\n

Green Bay\u2019s need for a true WR1 isn\u2019t a new topic of conversation, especially after Josh Jacobs\u2019 comments on the subject. Those types of wide receivers don\u2019t grow on trees or hit the market often if they\u2019re game-changing, but there were a few intriguing options.<\/p>\n

None of those potential candidates became Green Bay Packers in the initial wave of activity, and the remaining options are fairly dry. At this point, if the Packers want to acquire a true game-changing weapon for Jordan Love, it\u2019ll have to be through the draft.<\/p>\n

With Christian Watson set to miss time and the current WR group\u2019s cheap rookie deals entering their final days, the Packers need some help at the position. There weren\u2019t many great options out there, but two were of particular interest.<\/p>\n

Every year, we see a player\u2019s name attached to Green Bay that generates excitement before not going to Green Bay. This year, that player was former Seattle Seahawks receiver DK Metcalf.<\/p>\n

Discussion from the combine linked the Packers to Metcalf even before Metcalf was publicly looking for a trade. Metcalf\u2019s size and speed would have been a significant boost for Matt LaFleur\u2019s offense and given Love a legitimate star pass catcher.<\/p>\n

The hiccups were the cost and the potential fit. A first-round pick plus other assets is already steep for a team that doesn\u2019t generally trade for veterans, and Metcalf would require a new, long-term deal. It was also reported Metcalf didn\u2019t want to go somewhere cold.<\/p>\n

Ultimately, Metcalf went to notoriously warm Pittsburgh for a second-round pick and signed a four-year $132 million extension. That would have been steep but doable for the Packers.<\/p>\n

But as it turns out, the Packers may have been less in the market for Metcalf than believed, with The Athletic\u2019s Matt Schneidman reporting that the Packers never made an offer for Metcalf.<\/p>\n

I'm told the Packers never made an offer to the Seahawks for DK Metcalf, contrary to multiple reports. Brian Gutekunst and John Schneider are good friends from their time together in Green Bay, but a deal between the two for Metcalf was never a realistic possibility.<\/p>\n
