The Browns start to free agency has been off to a slow start as they try to figure out what they are going to do at quarterback, but a former Pro Bowl running back could still be in the plans.<\/h2>\n

BEREA<\/strong>\u00a0— There is no question that the first two days of the NFL’s ‘legal tampering’ period has been underwhelming for the Cleveland Browns. The biggest move–and it was a big move–came before free agency began, when the Browns announced that they had signed edge rusher\u00a0Myles Garrett<\/b>\u00a0to a four-year, $160 million contract extension, including over $122 million guaranteed. The move not only made Garrett the highest-paid non-quarterback in NFL history, but removed the dark cloud over the organization since Garrett demanded a trade from the Browns.<\/p>\n

In the first two days of the negotiating period, there have only been three moves made by the Browns that have been reported. The NFL league year officially begins at 4 pm. on Wednesday when players can officially sign contracts and teams can announce moves.<\/p>\n

So far, the Browns traded quarterback\u00a0Dorian Thompson-Robinson<\/b>\u00a0and a fifth-round draft choice for Eagles backup quarterback\u00a0Kenny Pickett<\/b>, agreed to terms with offensive tackle\u00a0Cornelius Lucas<\/b>\u00a0and edge rusher\u00a0Joe Tryon-Shoyinka<\/b>, while also are bringing back linebacker\u00a0Devin Bush<\/b>.<\/p>\n

In addition, the Browns notified defensive tackle\u00a0Dalvin Tomlinson<\/b>\u00a0that he would be released in a salary-cap move.<\/p>\n

The Browns need some good news and some good happen in news the Browns are bringing back one of their most beloved players, which could happen as soon as Wednesday or in the following days after the new league year begins.<\/p>\n

The OBR<\/em>\u00a0ran a story on Tuesday in ‘Insider Update’ on the possible return of Chubb.<\/p>\n

“Running back\u00a0Nick Chubb<\/b> remains an option. Talks haven’t gotten anywhere yet, but there may be an important reason for that. The team is likely to offer him a qualifying offer, which would pay him $3 million, but only count $1.5 million against the salary cap. That offer cannot be made until the league year begins, so if Chubb is going to re-sign, that won’t happen until Wednesday at 4 pm. at the earliest.”<\/p>\n<\/section>\n

At the NFL Combine in Indianapolis, GM\u00a0Andrew Berry<\/strong>\u00a0was asked if he expected Chubb to become a free agent when the NFL league year began on March 12.<\/p>\n

“I do expect Nick to hit the market… Obviously, his contract is up this year,” Berry said on Feb. 25. “We’ll meet with his reps and everything like that, but obviously, it’s something we need to work on in the next couple of weeks.”<\/p>\n

Many in the media projected the end of the Chubb era with the Browns to happen when Berry said that he expected Chubb to become a free agent.<\/p>\n

Spotrac projected Chubb’s market value as a free agent as one year for $3.26 million.<\/p>\n

\"Browns<\/p>\n

Chubb has said numerous times that he would like to remain with the Browns, but that does not sometimes, matter in the NFL.<\/p>\n

On March 5,\u00a0The Greetham Angle<\/em>\u00a0wrote: “Chubb is a free agent and wants to stay with the Browns, but the Browns cannot rely on him returning to the level of play that he performed at before the injury in 2023. He had 332 yards in eight games after returning in 2024, but averaged just 3.3 yards per carry.\u00a0The Browns cannot approach the offseason relying on Chubb getting back to his pre-injury yards per carry average of 5.3.”<\/p>\n

Chubb (5-11, 227) is entering his eighth season. He returned to the field in 2024 after the first six games of the season and rushed for a 332 yards before injuring his foot and finishing the season on injured reserve.<\/p>\n

Despite that, NFL.com ranked Chubb as the sixth-best-running back and 101st best overall free agent this offseason.<\/p>\n

Chubb, 29, ranks third on the all-time Browns rushing list with 6,843 yards, only 431 yards behind Hall of Fame running back\u00a0Leroy Kelly<\/b><\/strong>\u00a0with 7,274 yards. Only\u00a0Jim Brown\u00a0<\/strong>at 12,312 yards has more. It would be great if Chubb could at least play one more year with the Browns to be listed between Brown and Kelly.<\/p>\n

There are not a lot of choices in free agency, unlike in 2024 when\u00a0Saquon Barkley<\/b>\u00a0and\u00a0Derrick Henry<\/b>\u00a0were available. The projected top free agent running back,\u00a0Aaron Jones<\/b>,\u00a0 re-signed with the Vikings.<\/p>\n

The rookie running back class is heavy with some top-end running backs. The case could be made that the Browns could have a strong running back room with\u00a0Jerome Ford<\/b>, Chubb and a rookie or two to go with them.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

\u00a0Some of the top backs include,\u00a0Ashton Jeanty<\/b>\u00a0(Boise State),\u00a0Omarion Hampton<\/b>\u00a0<\/strong>(North Carolina),\u00a0TreVeyon Henderson<\/b>\u00a0<\/strong>(Ohio State),\u00a0Quinshon Judkins\u00a0<\/b><\/strong>(Ohio State),\u00a0Dylan Sampson\u00a0<\/b><\/strong>(Tennessee),\u00a0Kaleb Johnson<\/b>\u00a0<\/strong>(Iowa),\u00a0Cam Skattebo<\/b>\u00a0(Arizona State),\u00a0LeQuint Allen<\/b>\u00a0(Syracuse) or\u00a0Brashard Smith<\/b>\u00a0(SMU).<\/p>\n

Jeanty and Hampton are projected first-round picks and the Browns might not want to use a pick that high on a running back. Berry had drafted two running backs in his five years as general manager, drafting Ford in the fifth-round and\u00a0Demetric Felton<\/b>\u00a0in the sixth-round.<\/p>\n

On March 5,\u00a0The Greetham Angle<\/em>\u00a0wrote:<\/p>\n

“We like the idea of bringing back Chubb to go with Ford and at least one of the top backs in the draft, which there should be impact players still available like Henderson, Judkins, Skattebo, Allen, among others, on the second or third day of the NFL Draft. Ford has shown that he can be the lead back, but a high upside rookie back can compete for playing time immediately in the rotation. If Chubb returns close to his former self, the Browns will have a strong running back room.”<\/p>\n

The Browns could get a much needed win early in free agency with the fan base, much like the Garrett news, by bringing back Chubb with a low-risk, high-upside move. If Chubb returns close to being the former Pro Bowl running back at or above five yards a carry in his second year post-knee surgery, the Browns will be on their way to having a great running game, while also protecting themselves going forward with a young, promising back.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
