Chicago Blackhawks interim coach Anders Sorensen entered Saturday\u2019s road game against the Nashville Predators with just 19 games left to make his case for the permanent job.<\/p>\n

The Hawks\u2019 third-period rally to force overtime didn\u2019t hurt his cause, though they lost 3-2 on Steven Stamkos\u2019 goal to cap a hat trick.<\/p>\n

It was the Hawks\u2019 third straight overtime game; they lost two.<\/p>\n

If you\u2019re looking for signs of progress, the Hawks have earned a point in five straight games, a season high.\u00a0Their record is 3-0-2 in that span.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s not another moral victory, more of a consolation prize. And it\u2019s certainly better than the alternative.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think we\u2019re all just playing for each other,\u201d said Alex Vlasic, who scored the opening goal. \u201cHaving the young guys here has helped a lot and bring that energy.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt feels like a different environment.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sorensen said the goalie play from Arvid S\u00f6derblom, Saturday\u2019s starter, and Spencer Knight has been a big reason as well.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve been able to hang around in the games because of the goaltending,\u201d Sorensen said. \u201cBut also, we\u2019ve made some plays when games are tight; been able to score some goals there.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ilya MIkheyev scored in the third period \u2014 his 14th of the season \u2014 on a low-to-high feed from Ryan Donato to force overtime.<\/p>\n

Donato extended his point streak to eight games, and Mikheyev scored his fourth goal in six games.<\/p>\n

However, the Hawks squandered opportunities to put the game away in OT \u2014 they never took a shot. And the Preds caught the Hawks in a bad change when Donato went off for Joe Veleno, playing his first game with his new team.<\/p>\n

It put S\u00f6derblom in a three-on-two situation, and Fedor Svechkov fed Stamkos for the game-winning slapper from the left circle.<\/p>\n

\u201cI saw (Stamkos) coming down there for a one-timer option, but I also had to respect the shooter in the middle (Svechov),\u201d S\u00f6derblom said. \u201cThat\u2019s my first option and then he made a good pass on a one-timer. Just try to get over as quick as possible, but he obviously is a good shooter, so he found the top corner.\u201d<\/p>\n

Here are four takeaways from the loss.<\/p>\n

1. It was a shame to waste another solid goalie effort.<\/h4>\n

Yes, S\u00f6derblom is ultimately responsible as the last line of defense, but how many ways did the Hawks let him down?<\/p>\n

  • They started slow, with the Preds taking an 8-2 advantage in five-on-five, high-danger chances in the first period. \u201cFirst period was sleepy or tired or a combination of two,\u201d Sorensen said.<\/li>\n
  • Nick Foligno turned the puck over while trying to rim the puck, setting up Stamkos\u2019 second goal. Foligno snapped his stick on the post in frustration.<\/li>\n
  • The Hawks were outshot 41-19.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    At least S\u00f6derblom added to his highlight reel.<\/p>\n

    He made a diving backdoor save against Jonathan Marchessault in the first period. And in the third, S\u00f6derblom stopped Filip Forsberg\u2019s shot, then spun and dove on the puck after it bounced over his head.<\/p>\n

    Ultimately, S\u00f6derblom was done in by the aforementioned bad change.<\/p>\n

    \u201cIt\u2019s more so just understanding that the marginals (margins of error) to give up some stuff, when it\u2019s three-on-three, it becomes greater, right?\u201d Sorensen said. \u201cSo puck decisions and those tight one-on-ones, or if it\u2019s two-on-ones, and not getting stuck on the ice, are big components.\u201d<\/p>\n

    2. Colton Dach fighting in defense of Nazar speaks volumes.<\/h4>\n

    Justin Barron crushed Nazar into the boards, and Dach pounced on Barron in what became a lopsided throwdown.<\/p>\n

    It was reminiscent of Donato going after the Calgary Flames\u2019 Martin Pospisil for tuning up Nazar in December.\u00a0As Vlasic alluded to earlier, the younger players are taking more ownership of the team, as evidenced by situations such as this.<\/p>\n

    Column: Chicago Blackhawks GM Kyle Davidson made the right trade-deadline deals. Now it\u2019s time for a bold move.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

    \u201cEverybody\u2019s playing for each other and putting their bodies in the line,\u201d Vlasic said. \u201cGreat fight from Dacher tonight, stepping up for Frank. There\u2019s kind of that brotherhood mentality that we\u2019ve got going on.\u201d<\/p>\n

    For those keeping score, however, Pat Maroon (six) and Foligno (four) still top the leaderboard in fighting penalties.<\/p>\n

    3. In Connor Bedard\u2019s and Landon Slaggert\u2019s game of hot potato, nobody won.<\/h4>\n

    It made for a head-scratching sequence in the third period.<\/p>\n

    Nazar passed cross-ice to Bedard, but instead taking the backdoor shot, Bedard gave it up to Slaggert.<\/p>\n

    Slaggert didn\u2019t pull the trigger, either, dishing it back to Bedard, who flubbed the shot.<\/p>\n

    Bedard should\u2019ve taken advantage of his first opening, absolutely. But when he drew defenders and passed it back to Slaggert, then it became Slaggert\u2019s responsibility.<\/p>\n

    4. Joe Veleno handled his first Hawks game well.<\/h4>\n

    The forward was acquired in Friday\u2019s deal that sent Petr Mr\u00e1zek and forward Craig Smith to the Detroit Red Wings.\u00a0Veleno slotted in on the fourth line, replacing Smith and centering Lukas Reichel and Maroon.<\/p>\n

    Veleno finished 50% on faceoffs and seemed to acclimate quickly to the penalty kill, the best-run system the Hawks have.<\/p>\n

    \u201cHe had some pop in his step,\u201d Sorensen said. \u201cHe was in good spots defensively. He read the game well. He had some good offensive zone touches as well.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
