GREEN BAY, Wis. \u2013 The Green Bay Packers need a receiver, and that group took center stage at the Scouting Combine on Saturday.<\/p>\n

In golf, you drive for show and putt for dough. In football, the 40 is the equivalent of the tee shot. A lot of dough was made on the fast track of Lucas Oil Stadium. Ten receivers ran faster than 4.40 seconds. A total of 20 were faster than 4.45.<\/p>\n

The 40 matters \u2013 a lot \u2013 but it\u2019s not everything. That shows up in Brian Gutekunst\u2019s draft history.<\/p>\n

In 2023, Gutekunst drafted Jayden Reed (4.45), Dontayvion Wicks (4.57) and Grant DuBose (4.57). In 2022, he selected Christian Watson (4.36), Romeo Doubs (4.47) and Samori Toure (4.48). Joining Reed, Wicks, Watson and Doubs were Bo Melton (4.34), a seventh-round pick by the Seahawks, and Malik Heath (4.64), an undrafted free agent.<\/p>\n

With Watson coming off a torn ACL, there is a particular need for a big-play threat.<\/p>\n

Scouting Combine Winners at Receiver<\/h3>\n

Matthew Golden, Texas<\/strong><\/p>\n

4.29 seconds. Enough said. Golden was considered a first-round prospect before Saturday and he\u2019ll be a first-round pick after Saturday. The question is whether he ran himself out of potentially landing with the Packers at No. 23. After two seasons at Houston, he caught 58 passes for 987 yards (17.0) and nine touchdowns in 2024.<\/p>\n

\u201cI would say my route running and the catch point\u201d are the strengths of his game, he said. \u201cBeing able to attack the ball, wherever the ball is. Being able to play inside and outside. \u2026<\/p>\n

\u201cYou can move me anywhere. I can get open at any phase, at any level. Just understanding the game and seeing whatever the team wants me to do. I\u2019m reliable on special teams also. So I feel I can change the game in any way.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dont’e Thornton Jr., Tennessee<\/strong><\/p>\n

At 6-foot-4 5\/8 and with 4.30 speed, there\u2019s some Marquez Valdes-Scantling vibes. Without Watson, Thornton at least has a similar skill-set. He led the nation with 25.4 yards per catch in 2024.<\/p>\n

Jayden Higgins, Iowa State<\/strong><\/p>\n

Higgins had an excellent season at Iowa State with 87 receptions for 1,183 yards and nine touchdowns. He\u2019s got towering height and plenty of speed, making him an easy consideration if he\u2019s available in the second round.<\/p>\n

\u201cBeing a big guy, I can do anything that a small guy can do and also just being able to catch the ball when it’s in the air and make plays,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Jalen Royals, Utah State<\/strong><\/p>\n

At 6-foot, Royals isn\u2019t exactly tall. But at 205 pounds, he\u2019s definitely not small. His 4.42 in the 40 included a 10-yard split of 1.49 seconds. That was the fastest among the receivers \u2013 even faster than Golden (1.53).<\/p>\n

Elic Ayomanor, Stanford<\/strong><\/p>\n

The size is good (6-1 3\/4, 206 pounds) and the athleticism is more than good (4.44 in the 40, 38.5-inch vertical). The 10-inch hands are a big deal, though. In two seasons, he caught 125 passes for 1,844 yards and 12 touchdowns.<\/p>\n

Tai Felton, Maryland<\/strong><\/p>\n

After a final season of 96 receptions for 1,124 yards and nine touchdowns, Felton put up elite numbers in the 40 (4.37), vertical (39.5 inches) and broad jump (10 feet, 10 inches).<\/p>\n

\u201cI feel like I’m a three-level receiver,\u201d he said. \u201cI can get it done in the short passing game, towards certain short routes, into big plays, intermediate, come across the middle, catch pass to take hits, and I can take the top off the defense. So, I feel like with being a three-level receiver, I can get it done in all phases.\u201d<\/p>\n

Scouting Combine Losers at Receiver<\/h3>\n

Isaiah Bond, Texas<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m going to break the (40) record tomorrow, for sure,\u201d Bond proclaimed. \u201cI anticipate running 4.20, or possibly, if I\u2019m feeling great, I might run 4.1.\u201d<\/p>\n

Instead, Xavier Worthy\u2019s Combine-record 4.21 remains safe as Bond ran his 40 in 4.39 seconds \u2013 a good time, yes, but far short of his boastful prediction.<\/p>\n

Nick Nash, San Jose State<\/strong><\/p>\n

Nash, who started his career at quarterback, had an incredible final collegiate season with 104 receptions for 1,382 yards and 16 touchdowns. His testing numbers were ho-hum with a 4.57 in the 40 and a 34-inch vertical. Plus, his 8 3\/4-inch hands might take him off Green Bay\u2019s board.<\/p>\n

Pat Bryant, Illinois<\/strong><\/p>\n

He\u2019s got inviting size at 6-foot-2 1\/4 and consistent production, but Bryant\u2019s 40 time was the second-slowest on Saturday. He did post a solid 37.5-inch vertical. His pro day will be critical.<\/p>\n

Antwane Wells, Mississippi<\/strong><\/p>\n

At 6-foot 3\/4 and 201 pounds, Wells ran his 40 in 4.58 with a 34-inch vertical. That\u2019s not good enough for a player who averaged 19.8 yards per catch in 2024.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
